It’s mentioned every game these days but my god our fielding is insanely average these days. Sort of coincided with when Luke Ronchi became fielding coach wonder if he’ll ever be given the chop

Points of minor interest for remainder of match: Will Santner overtake Raval's wicket tally of 1?
Doubt he'll manage it before the end of the series tbh

Seriously, his place in the team is just a poor poor selection. We went through this during the tour of SL when Santner bowled flat rubbish and was completely outbowled by both Ajaz and Sommerville. The idea that spinners can't possibly contribute to a tour of Australia, and therefore you should just select a dollar store Vettori and hope he won't **** the bed too bad was ridiculous from the start. Team's that go to Australia and win have either had a) an ATG great fast bowler or 2 (which we don't have) or b) a spinner who can pull his weight (which we probably don't have - but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth trying to find one).

NZ will be hoping like hell they take five or more after tea, otherwise it’ll likely be australia batting til this time tomorrow. Been a very tough few days for them.

That’s the point though. They literally have a guy that’s got experience in Australia, and leave him out of an Australian series.

For a guy that doesn’t take wickets.

So is it worth trying out Astle for the next test then? From whatever I seen he bowls a fair number of hit-me deliveries mixed in with some real good ones (fairly standard for a leggie); so possibly a bit more upside to selecting him on the bowling front, but Kane doesn't really know what to do with him.

Really hope Boult is properly fit for the next test, wouldn't want to be going into Melbourne and Sydney with anything less than five fit bowling options. Can't have Southee and Wagner's workloads get out of hand.

Nah, Astle also a poor selection. Athlai is right about one thing - you do need a spinner who can keep a reasonable grip on the scoring rate. That man isn't Astle. Without a change in the squad I don't see a way of improving on the current situation.

Just watching the superb highlights package of the '85 series on Sky. NZ flew John Bracewell over specially for the second test when they realised how much the SCG pitch was going to turn. They may need to do something similar with Sommerville - they will need a replacement anyway with Ferguson injured.

One way would be to ditch the spinner completely, play four frontline quicks (Henry and Boult joining the current two assuming Ferguson's out) and have CdG performing the holding role (with Raval and KW helping out. Not ideal I know.

Do agree with jcas above, am all for summoning Somerville as replacement but that just isn't the way of this NZ setup.

I think that’s a mistake tbh. Five quicks incl Colin is really overkill. I get the frustration but i don’t think it’s feasible tbh

Agree and also, I didn't have faith that Santner could do either part of the role assigned to him on this tour anyway i.e. score runs against Australia's quicks or keep the runs down. The latter because Australian batsmen at home are extremely hard to contain unless you take wickets, which Santner doesn't. And nothing's happened to dissuade me from that - Santner's been the most expensive bowler this match aside from Ferguson.

Obviously, I like the guy and all, but he just doesn't offer enough right now. Should've been Somerville, with Santner perhaps a squad member.
