The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I'm not even sure Root should be a part of the 'fab 4'. To me, he's not particularly better than someone like Pujara although I do suppose he is RIDICULOUSLY consistent for middling scores.
While Joe Root is the worst Test batsman of the four, he is also the second best ODI batsman among them.

Tests : Smith > Kohli > Williamson > Root

ODI: Kohli > Root > Williamson > Smith

Are Boycott and Barrington the only 2 batsmen to be dropped immediately after scoring a century? Tells you a bit about why a guy with a 58 average isn't rated that highly.

You have been here for 2 months. How do you know what's peak CW. :p You are right though.
Tbf it's been amazing. I've doubled and tripled my cricket knowledge and seen for the first time reasonable Indian and Australian supporters. Some aren't but most are.

Don’t think you need both Kallis and Sobers in unless you genuinely think Kallis is better as a batsman than the other middle order candidates.
Don't think he was better that the other candidates. But certainly not too much worse either. But he can be the 5th bowler, allowing Sobers to play just as a batsman and stand in the slips all day. Kallis too could stand in the slips, nullifying the need (along with Hadlee's batting) to play Warne just for his others skills. Plus he would be that calming influence batting between Sobers and Gilchrist.

TBF, all 3 of those teams were very good bowling attacks at home at that time. So there were a lot of competitive games.
Yeah. All top 8 teams were genuinely competitive at home. Sri Lanka, India and New Zealand really couldn't tour well though.

Yeah India were almost unbeatable at home in the 90s but the exact opposite outside the SC. I think we struggled to beat even Zimbabwe.

What do you guys think?
Even 5 is too low for Kallis. 6 is a no no. Swapping places with sobers makes it more acceptable.

Really though? His batting style is suited for most positions, plus I'm playing Sobers purely as a batsman and in my opinion he is the superior batsman and I want him in earlier.

It does seem counterintuitive to play a specialist number 3 below someone who played 5/6 most of his career.

Kallis batted way more regularly at 4, not 3. Sobers average gradually lowered the lower down the order he batted between 3-6.

Honestly, I just don't get the need for both, but I can see you've already explained your reasoning kyear.

Sobers spent more time at six than any other position, must have been his/team preference at the time. Doesn't seem any particular method though, cos he jumped all over the place in the order thru his career. He succeeded anywhere in the order from 3-6, so it doesn't matter too much.

...although I can understand the rationale of wanting Kallis between Sobers and Gilchrist.
