This is quite clearly demonstrating Paine’s limitations. Needs to rotate the strike.

Good to see Head making some runs when needed too. TJB will hopefully be drowning iin his own vomit at seeing it.

Would you care to remember Steve Smith's score after 25 deliveries?

Fmd how ****ing long does it take to set the field? Santner starting off like yesterday too, with rubbish.

I care to remember he averages over 60 and has a proven record of accelerating and grinding sides to atoms. Paine has a proven record of soaking up balls and stalling any momentum his team has before getting out softly and exposing the tail to an attack which has renewed vigour.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think the genius of Wagner with this short pitched stuff is he doesn't bowl at a searing sort of pace which makes your first instinct to duck and weave. You think if he's low-mid 130s you should be taking that on pretty comfortably, but he gets them through at an awkward height to always hook and pull effectively. It's a really good method for a bloke who bowls such an awkward bouncer.

There are so many intangibles to it, isn't there? I was thinking of this watching Kesrick Williams and Pollard bowl in the T20 against India the other day. They rile the batsmen up with their antics, then when the batsman is absolutely raring to go all pumped up, they amble in, never add real pace to their run up (esp. Pollard who bowls just with the most ambling jump ever) and basically play on the batsman to go for a shot in haste, by delivering the slowest of cutters that too, from as short as they can get to in their own half of the pitch. Wagner is somewhat similar in that he works the ego of the batsman. Smith is similar too, but he works the ego of the bowler. Fascinating that we can see so many aspects of the game with all the HD coverage and multiple cameras. I won't have noticed all this stuff 25 years ago for sure.

Not going to back down from opinions on Santner. He really can't land 2 or 3 in the same spot, and he also struggles with any consistency of flight. Really easy to either get forward to or play off the pitch.

International Captain
Lot of responsibility on Southee now to deal with the lower order in Boult's absence. Been exemplary for the most part, playing the senior role well. Need Taylor to step ip similarly with the bat.
