Lockie might struggle to get another test tbh. We're very conservative with selection and limping off on debut is never a great look (bennett)

So in a test between Australia and New Zealand the South Africans have top scored and taken the most wickets.

Smart cricket from the kiwis. Realistically they are a team of club cricketers ...
Have you checked ICC test rankings recently?

3 Williamson
9 Nicholls
11 Latham
14 Watling
16= Taylor

4 Wagner
11= Boult
13 Southee

Not bad for club cricketers ....

Santa wasn't even bowling particularly well until the 3rd session either. Need to keep in mind that Yasir Shah was treated with absolute and utter disdian by Australia and ended up going at 5 per over, and he is easily better than any wicket taking spin option NZ has ever had.
Hold on, you're saying he's better than any spin option EVER?

If CdG is going at 1s, and Southee is usually very tight too, what's the point in a third guy who isnt going to get wickets? I'm still not at all sold on Santner. Yes Mount Maunganui, where he bowled well for 2-3 overs and scored an admittedly tremendous ton. But people forget he didn't bowl well at all on day 5 at the Mount, with ideal footmarks. Stokes had no issues with him at all. His inconsistency to be able to hit a spot with flight was telling- as it was in the WC game v Pakistan.

Definitely prepared to give him the benefit for a while, and his batting is a bonus, but we might find ourselves failing to close out games on the fifth day if he stays the limited over-type bowler he is and can't adapt. He's a very talented guy so I reckon he can,but he isnt it now

Other thing about Santner's role as economical spinner is that he hasn't been that economical recently. Going at above 3 per over as he did yesterday, better than only Ferguson, was no surprise.

He did occasionally (and to my surprise) cause Smith and Labuschagne to play a false shot. Just like old-times Vettori though, causing a little indecision through the air is usually only enough for a miscue or thick edge rather than a wicket, if you're not turning it.

He's basically in the side for his batting.

Watched every ball of the first day and thoroughly enjoyed it. But for Lockie's injury I think it was even stevens. I can't really fault any of the bowlers. The pitch looked good enough for batting and our bowlers did a good job consistently testing the Aussie line up. Warner was looking very dangerous, glad it took a super effort from Wagner to pull off the one hander. Steve Smith looked out of place but shows how he can still score or put a partnership together even if he's batting is below par. Santner when bowled slightly slower showed there is a bit of spin and bounce. The ball did fair bit later in the day. The way Southee set up Matthew Wade was excellent, two outies and one innie taking the peg. Overall good day of cricket to watch. Wish the game started and finished a bit earlier. Didn't have to walk around blurry eyed all day at work.

Oh those leaves from Labuschagne and Steve Smith, couldn't resist thinking how much sledge one would get at club cricket for a leave of that fashion :laugh: Those leaves... who started that? I'm guessing Steve Smith did and Labuschagne picked that up from Smith? They must have thought it's pretty cool to leave like that and for us who's been used to watching graceful leaves it has us in splits. For sure they must have a logic to why they leave like that? I mean it feels like they missed a pull shot every time they leave. Steve Smith, the best test cricketer currently must have some reason for such a leave you'd think.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
One thing that did impress me is that our bowlers didn't really slip too badly when things weren't going their way. In 2015 once they slipped they basically fell down the mountain and waited for Australia to stop having fun at the top. Yesterday they dug in, got new footholds and started climbing again.

Not Terrible
Santner the GOAT.

But nah I think he was saying that Yasir is a better attacking spinner than anyone NZ have ever had and still got smacked.
Correct. Economical spinner is the role Santa plays. Ffs it's like people can't see the game beyond pure wicket taking average.

Whatever it takes!!!
Nah it was junk. Blokes who average over 50 aren't known for their brain fades. Though I agree Smith isn't batting well at. The problem seemingly a proportionally low output versus balls received and therefore a poor return for all his concentration. I think he's reacting to that frustration.

Again, you do realize I am actually crediting Smith there? I don't think he is gonna get out unless he gets himself out. And when I say brain fade, I am obviously exaggerating and using the term he himself used once about himself. What I mean is, there will be the one mistake he makes at the beginning of his innings and teams need to capitalize on that and be lucky enough to capitalize as well. It could well be a bad shot that lands in no man's land, it could be a poor stroke but he does not nick it, but its usually like he makes that one obvious mistake and if teams don't get him then, he makes them pay and grinds them to dirt. I cannot believe I have to explain something that simple.

If you are looking for junk, look at TJB's post here. Or the responses to mine. :p

If the pitch deteriorates into a spinners paradise and he doesn't take advantage, then he was a bad pick.

If it doesn't and he plays a containment role, even picking up 1-2 wickets, as well as scoring runs, then he was a good pick.

Australian pitches generally don't offer much to spinners...yet they also don't justify leaving one out and using four frontline seamers (which we kind of have anyway with CdG).

As much as I wanted Patel and Somers, I don't think they would've added a huge amount to the attack for this pitch. MCG and SCG, maybe, but not here.

I can see Lyon licking his chops looking at some of the balls Santa got to turn yesterday. The pitch looks as though it has a bit of turn in it.

Wonder if it might initially turn less as it dries out, like Brisbane in 2017. That said there are already footmarks forming.
