henry's faithful hammering of the corridor is a bit naive. he's not bowling badly, he just doesn't have a plan beyond hitting the spot. it works in odis but not on test cricket motorways.

compare him to wagner and southee who have a bag of variations. henry has the talent to succeed, but doesn't really have the bowling variety to be effective on roads atm.
Henry's done pretty much what I expected of him - good with the new ball (and should've had a second wicket) but does not provide much with the older ball. Agree Southee has varied his attack a lot better with the older ball.

Wagner hasn't been great this innings either. The radio comms suggested Root was being friendly with him and so Wagner wasn't angry enough .

A bold strategy that Australian's naturally are unable to reproduce.

im not saying retain next game, im saying he has the talent but needs to go back to canterbury and develop some variations between odi series.
He's been turning out for Cantebury quite regularly in red ball cricket right? Or is it a case of spending too much time in the dressing room as a squad member?

Maybe NZ feel they've done Ferguson a favour by not debuting him on a road and making him stretch out just before an Australia tour.? Still, if they do plan to play him you'd think getting as many overs under the belt as possible is better preparation.

we're going to get creamed but it's nice to fantasize about wagner and ferguson breaking warners arm

he's the ultimate htb though so rip us

Quite a while since we've had to bat a day to save a test - last time we hosted England?

Can we please not leave it to Watling and the all-rounders again. Williamson, Nicholls and Taylor due, and yes Raval too.

The best part of this innings from an England perspective is that Root has played well over 400 balls. It's a proper test match knock. The last few tons he's scored have come at a very high, ODI-like SR. While that's not inherently a bad thing, when coupled with their scarcity shows that Root has struggled with gritting it out. Champion knock.

If you do that, you get Smith in when making runs actually counts. Never a good thing tbh.

Damn... Ollie Pope gone. He was nearing a hundred and after about 80 runs or so would have likely blocked 50 odd balls to get to 100. Bad timing. The rest of the batters actually hit the ball quite well and score quickly.

Are they good enough to get 140+ runs in the next 30 overs and have 10 overs at Black Caps tonight? I'd rather they do that and we get tested a bit under pressure. If England is bowled out for 500 or there and there abouts there'll be nothing left in this test match other than our boys just having to bat all day. Better be under pump for a bit and that'll help the test series in Aussie.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Having us 2 down tonight would put us on super shaky ground, especially if the 2 were Latham and Williamson.

They're only 80 odd ahead aren't they? You'd have to back NZ to chase 120-150 odd in a canter and build a lead from there so it's impossible for a win.

Is there any word on Boult and how long he's supposed to be out for

Now Root gone... not good. Probably best to skip watching the rest of the game as there's nothing in it other than of course watching King Kane bat all day.

All of a sudden, things are happening quite quickly. New ball just around the corner, too.

It's not a chase though... we'll be behind by 100 odd and we can't set the game up from there.

Boulty back after this week I think but not so sure if CDG is going to be back. Probably will miss the Aussie tour. To be honest we won't miss CDG much in Aussie conditions. Boult is very crucial for Aussie series.
