When we refer to great teams, we always refer to the 70s and 80s Windies team and 90s and 2000s Aussie team. But which of those teams do you think are better? the windies team or Aussies team? Some old-timers who have watched the windies team live might know better.

Played in modern conditions the Aussies easily. The 70s/80s Windies sides didn't have a quality spinner to get through the overs.

It'd be a bowler dominated series for sure. McGrath/Warne/Gillespie/ McDermott vs Ambrose/ Marshall/ Garner/Holding. Australia's batting lineup was comfortably better than the Windies with Gilchrist at 7.

The WI were harder to beat but the Aussies were more relentless at winning games.

First of all WI were not world beaters in 70's (beaten 5-1 by Australia in 75/76). But all the 80's/mid 90's teams wish WI had a quality spinner instead the awesome relentless pace attack that destroyed every side they faced (especially during the back to back tests against England and Australia in mid 80's where both sides played WI 10 tests in a row....this pace attack destroyed careers)

Played in modern times "easily"?? Lol. A great Australian team drew with the wi in 99 when all WI had was Ambrose, Walsh and Lara. Played in 70s/80s conditions, it would be a no brainer. And people can say all they want about Warne but he never really dominated even the ordinary WI teams of his times, idk how he'd be expected to do better vs an even stronger team (especially in the WI). I've said this before, played in Australia under modern conditions Australia would probably win 3-2, in the WI under 80s conditions WI would win 3-1 probably drawing at the ARG or Bourda.

I'd say WI became world beaters right after that series. After that series, they only lost in india with a second wi xi and away to NZ. Those two series aside, wi won against all comers post 75-76.

WI were great for longer than Aussies. Peak WI period lasted for like 18 years between 1976 England tour until the tour of India in 1994-95. They never looked like dropping a series during this period(probably happened only once against NZ in 1980). With their backs to the wall, they came back roaring like champions(for instance 1981-82 against Aussies or in the late eighties against Pak). They never needed a spinner to win them matches and it is unfair to hold them down in this regard. Destroyed India in India where someone like Warne was repeatedly owned decades later.
Aussies on the other hand were more relentless as vcs mentioned(but for a shorter tenure). In the early part of their great era(1995-99), they had a bit of dead match syndrome and hence put the foot off the pedestal when there was nothing at stake. They got rid of this habit later on and were ruthless, but could be beaten by an inspired opposition as proved by India and England.

How long exactly did WI's unbeaten series streak last? Early 80's to the home defeat vs. Australia?

Yes, 15 years. From NZ tour 1980 until 1995 against Aus.

Aus on the other hand had the longest unbeaten streak of 4 years(2001-2005) in their golden years.

Another striking part is the number of ATGs both teams had during their periods of domination.

Australia had 5(Ponting, Waugh, Gilchrist, Warne, Mcgrath). Arguably 6 if you add Hayden.

WI had 8(!). Viv, Lara,Roberts,Holding,Garner, Marshall,Ambrose,Walsh. They also had a few of ATG quality but unfortunately fell short of the same only due to longevity(Clarke,Croft,Bishop). The best Aussie team during this peak would be roughly equal to the best WI during their peak but WI could create another near ATG team in this era, Aussies couldn't if you take 1995-2008.

Stephen's post was obviously one eyed, not surprisingly though.

South Africa went 5 years without losing a series IIRC (2009 to 2014, both to Australia at home) which is probably the longest I can think of in recent times.

Yeah, that is the only team one could think of.

That SA team would give Aussies a run for their money on tour down under but would fold up more often at home.
