I'm one of the biggest Henry fans but even I think his reselection is a bit off if it's true. Love him but Fergusons just got that intangible x-factor that we need a bit of.

That said, he could also be as successful as Shaun Tait. Such is that sort of thing.

Personally I'm just jazzed Wagner is now #3 in the world and that I didn't realise India were playing two tests next year. What a summer!
It's gotta be Ferguson.

Say 12-18 months ago if an injury had opened up a fast bowler spot for NZ, choosing between Henry or Ferguson would've considered which bowler was injured, how they'd fill the role and what the expected pitch and conditions were, as some would favour Henry and some Ferguson.

But by now, it's Ferguson in pretty much 100% of scenarios imo.

Curious to see how Daryl de Mitchellhomme goes. Wouldn't have expected to play test cricket any time soon, if ever, but between an extremely well-timed double century at the start of the season and CDG injury, it's going to happen. On the one hand, he doesn't have very good domestic numbers, on the other as a cricketer he's a dead ringer for CDG and may be able to surprise us to a similar degree.

Looking through that earlier thread I saw when CDG was first selected I described him as NZ's 5th or 6th best all-rounder, so Mitchell must be the 7th or 8th .

If it were Wagner that Ferguson and Henry were waiting to replace you'd be right. But Henry's test record looks a lot more respectable in games where he's opened the bowling (15 wickets in 5 games at an average of 33.93). Ferguson would still be my pick, but on a green wicket where getting it in the corridor is often more important than pace, I could see why a conservative selector might opt for Henry with the new rock.

We did 5 years ago. India and China have been comfortably ahead for a while now.
Sorry, should have said we have more migrants from the UK than any other country, not we get. Total English immigrants is more than Indian and Chinese immigrants put together. Slightly more Indian and Chinese migrants arrived this year than 5 years ago, but total English immigrants massively outnumber Chinese and Indians overall.

Well ~70% of us are from the UK by ancestry anyway. Hard to really count people who came here 40 years ago as migrants in that fashion IMO.

Look I'm still a Henry fan and it is not that he would be expected to do a bad job if there's new ball movement - could be quite effective. Though I will mention one additional point against him, which is that he strongly prefers bowling to RHB, and a real difficulty with left handers is not what you want when replacing Boult (who excels to LHB).

However it's more that Ferguson represents such a compelling case - a genuine quick with a great FC record, great average, just about the first genuine quick NZ has produced that isn't constantly injured. Someone to add fire power that is different to, and complements, that of the other bowlers, and will find out some % of opposing batsmen (and tail-enders) we come up against. Also someone who is clearly an extremely competitive personality. Time to see if he can perform at the highest level.

So I do think it is pretty clear cut.

You sound much like me on this, in that I’d throw the remote through the TV if Henry was selected over Ferguson tomorrow. It just wouldn’t make any sense!

Some thoughts on Matt Henry...let's not count this guy out lol. At this point he's made a career out of proving people wrong. More often than not, he comes in out of the cold and takes wickets. Lets not forget that the last time he had to replace Southee or Boult, we almost tied that home test series against SA in early 2017. He took 5/113 in that match and was one of our standout performers. Lockie did have one hell of a world cup, but so did Henry IMO. Guy was a livewire in the KO phase.

Now like all of you, I want Ferguson to play, its not even a "ouu he has pace and pace is ***y, lets play pace" thing anymore. Ferguson has pretty much left Henry in the ruins...he's in much better form, has a new role to play in regards to our bowling attack, brings an entirely different dynamic to the team in a good way, and has the X-factor.

But at this point with alllllllll these injuries and god knows how many more...I want Henry or some spinner to replace Boult and keep Ferguson rested. I would be totally behind the idea of Ferg not playing this next test vs Eng. Its not for the WTC points and we need him for bigger things down the line vs AUS & IND.

Go Henry! :)

I get it if Henry gets picked. He'd be pretty high in Stead's estimations after an outstanding World Cup, and yes I know that's ODI cricket but they'd back him to do a job. I also get the Ferguson love, and I'd pick him tomorrow, but I can see both sides.

Isn't this why you *would* play Ferguson over Henry then? A game with no points on the line at home would be a far better place to introduce Ferguson than a high pressure setting in Australia where newbies don't hit the ground running that easily. If we're going to find out how Ferguson takes to test cricket (which seems inevitable) better Hamilton than Perth/Melbourne/Sydney.

Will say that it'll be a cruel blow for Henry if he were to miss out. While his test career has never really taken off and hasn't had the chance to develop at this level, he's never let the side down either when called up (the last India tour and the South Africa game come to mind). Would expect him to do well at Hamilton and even Perth, but more upside to playing Ferguson I suppose.

henry cops a lot of stick for that waca test where he was too short, but even if he had pitched it up it wouldn't have made a difference. australian batsmen at home on a motorway. you gotta be steyn or bumrah to have a chance.

he'll get his chance though. our trio are all 30 or older, this is when the injuries commence. we'll need all 5 quicks over the next few seasons.

I'll say it again coz I keep seeing posts like this.

Ferguson is 28. People talk like he's 21. He won't be able to hit 150 forever. No point saving him and saving him it's gonna be now or never soon

Not quite sure how England have landed themselves in this predicament of playing Pope as a keeper in this Test?

Another example of how little England think of their keeper actually being a pivotal position, it’s anyone’s place who can average close to 40, regardless of their glovework (I appreciate that’s an exaggeration but you get my point).

Is there a proper reason why Foakes doesn’t make the squad even in Bairstow's absence? (sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere at length)

It's a 2 match series that doesn't count to the world test championship so I don't think they were overly concerned about picking the strongest 15 squad and covering all bases. That's why Ali, Bairstow, Foakes, and even Anderson (who may have been fit if pushed) are not out there, and the likes of Mahmood, Parkinson, and Crawley are in the squad when they aren't really in the top 15 players in the country.

With Foakes I would guess it's a combination of him having a poor season, and him taking a break from the game. Last winter Foakes had intended to take the whole winter off due to fatigue but in the end toured in Sri Lanka and did well. Possibly a similar issue this winter, with England deciding it was better he had a break rather than toured around as the second wicketkeeper in the off chance that there is an injury to Buttler.
