Yeah, Im with SteveNZ on this. It was literally just one **** wasnt it. And yet you have articles saying this is comparable to incidents in european football where 2000 people are making monkey sounds and flinging bananas at black footballers.

I dont see what good comes from pretending this is like what happened with symonds at vadodara for example (I was at the ground that day and I can say with some degree of confidence that it was more than just the 4 blokes who were officially banned), when literally everyone agrees it was just one douchebag. Punish him, move on. Instead of trying to make some tired point about how everyone is is getting more racist.
Yeah, having thought about it this is kind of how I see it from someone who lives elsewhere too. Stands out owing to the (perception at least) this is a rare thing in NZ. Fair play to Archer for speaking up about it though, no matter where it happens,

Cricket crowds in NZ can be pretty obnoxious after a few hours on the beers. Remember sitting near a guy saying all kinds of horrible things to a (white) South African player when they toured here a few years back. Generally speaking it's not a huge problem but I wouldn't call it an isolated incident either.

Was it Andre Nel by any chance? If so I can imagine he probably gave a fair bit of chat in response

Yeah, the likes of Atherton and Matt Hayden have said that NZ crowds were amongst the worst in terms of abuse they received.

Archer's been around for all of 5 minutes. Great prospect for sure but his one wicket from a batsman set on 200 trying to get quick runs is wholly underwhelming. Outbowled by Curran.

Based on returns in the last couple of years:

1. Burns
2. Latham
3. Williamson*
4. Nicholls
5. Stokes
6. Watling+
7. de Grandhomme
8. Leach/Somerville/Patel
9. Wagner
10. Boult
11. Anderson

Southee not being a southpaw runs against him. Wanted a L/R opening bowling combo.
I would still have Moeen at 8 in that team.

Article doesn't specify how long they're both out for but imagine it's going to be touch and go for the first test in Oz, which sucks.

I see they've brought CDG2 - sometimes known as Daryl Mitchell - into the squad for the second test. iirc he dismissed Root in the warmup with his wobbly dobbles so that works.

The way the NZC was talking it sounds like they're at least hopeful that both players will be fit for Perth, though obviously not great that they'll be carrying niggles.

Fielding in front of the Basin embankment in the 90s must have been a brutal experience, it was just absolute chaos there in those days. Hopefully things have moved on a fair bit from a player’s point of view since then. I definitely don’t notice the same sort of stuff going on these days ... in fact in the recent ODIs at the Basin I’ve actually found the crowd a bit too boring!

I've heard Kiwi crowds giving a bit of abuse to overseas players, but it has never been race based. This is very sad for Archer and I hope he gets the support he needs, but it was also only 1 person being racist.

Regarding the selection I guess Mitchell is the most similar to CDG, but what did Neesham do wrong? Nathan Smith could bat 7 (he's at 4 for Otago) and is a better bowler than Mitchell but that would be a huge punt, and Santner's performance in the last game would've counted against Ravindra. I guess Kugglelijn could've been another option but he's more of an 8 than a 7 and isn't a holding bowler.

If we weren't going to Australia I'd probably just play Blundell as a specialist batsman, but they probably don't want the bowlers to be too tired out, so would like a 5th bowler.

I know at this point of their careers (especially Neesham's) there are a lot of other intangibles factoring into this selection decision - but still, it's interesting to note how mediocre Neesham's FC record is. Going off the numbers it makes perfect sense to pick Mitchell as a batting all-rounder.

He's also averaging 211 with the bat and 12 with the ball this FC season
