Ozil wasn't even really a big money signing tbh. Not by RM standards at least.

Arsenal spent more on Arshavin than RM did on Ozil, around the same period of time. Mad really.
RM spent more on Fabio Coentrao.

The thing is, his success almost guaranteed a good ROI if the club wanted to take it, because most of the players he bought were worth far more after he was done with them. Even at Inter where he left behind a badly aged squad, Inter could have got a fortune for them if they'd been sold right after becoming treble winners.

Same with Pep at City. So he spent £100m on Sterling and De Bruyne but how much are they worth now? Owners will be more than happy if you put lots of their money into an asset that massively appreciates.

Haha ****, Coentrao is still only 31 years old. I thought he was at least 5-6 older than that, and would be long gone by now. But no. Was still even on the RM books until last year.

From what I recall he had one year left on his deal and told the Werder higher ups that he was off to Madrid on a free if they didn't sell him that summer, hence the shiddy price.

Pretty sure Sterling and de Bruyne were signed while Pellegrini was manager?

Yeah probably right, though they are usually counted when people talk shite about Pep spending money. Could use Bernardo or whoever as an example instead.

Tactically the game has changed a lot since his time at Porto and Mou continues to be adamant to change.
People talk a lot about the game leaving him behind, which is probably mostly true but I think he's also just got worse. A lot of his teams played some pretty great football at times, but at United he seemed to play shite football as a matter of principle.

I think the transfer market is probably Guardiola's biggest weakness. He's great at improving players, there's a ridiculous number of players at all his clubs who have played their best football under him, but his actual signings are a different matter.

United was probably the first squad he ever had that didn't have good defenders. I wonder if that's the thing that really killed him.

His personality finally caught up with him. You can't succeed forever as a manager of people while being an odious bloke.
