South Africa have had as many great all rounders as every other nation combined. It's ridiculous.

Who would you guys think have been the best batsman and bowler for each test nation? It just occurred to me this morning that both Sri Lanka (definitely) and England (imo) had their greatest ever batsman and greatest ever bowler playing alongside one another.

Kallis/Steyn definitely, although Steyn wasn't around for the entire first decade of Kallis' career.

Also, Tendulkar/Kumble and Imran/Miandad, although both can be disputed.

I'm guessing for SA most will go G. Pollock/Steyn? Although I think there's a genuine case to be made for Kallis/Steyn, which would mean SA is added to the list.

Anyway, my full list:

Aus: Bradman/McGrath
Bang: Shakib/Shakib
Eng; Hobbs/Barnes
Ind: Tendulkar/?!?! (Really difficult to give a definitive answer for this one).
Pak: Miandad/Akram
SA: Pollock/Steyn
SL: Sanga/Murali
WI: Viv/Marshall

England: Hutton / Trueman

It pleases me to no end to see common sense prevail when it came to Australia's greatest bowler; yes it's rightfully McGrath !!! WAG!!

As much as I love Malcom and respect Sir Richard, neither one is any tier above Glenn McGrath. Glenn McGrath was a serious expletive bowler!!!
McGrath is at most an equivalent of Ambrose. Imran and co are at that same level.

Saying any one of the very top tier quicks is on another level is just disingenuous. It’d be like saying Warne and Murali are on vastly different levels, or that any one batsman is clearly the 2nd best of all time (until Smith finishes at least).

It annoys me no end when I see people giving Steyn's position in an ATXI to Akram. There are good arguments that Akram isn't even the best left handed quick.

When you take all of the ball tampering that went on and how poor the Pakistani bowlers were against Australia, it's impossible for me to place him ahead of Steyn for an AT side.

Imran- 2
Hadlee - 1
Marshall - 3
Warne - 4

My ATG XI tailend.

Steyn has a good case but Imran's batting puts him marginally ahead. Depends what type of bowler you want. Perhaps I'm relying too much on Marshall here.

Many former players and players who played in 90s have rated Akram as the best bowler of his time; ahead of McGrath, Ambrose, Donald etc.

For example Lara said in interview that “Mcgrath might have gotten me out most often but Akram was the best bowler I faced by a mile”. Kallis also expressed similar sentiment.

Initially I thought it has do with Akram’s ability to do things with the ball. But after digging more about him, I feel convinced that if Pakistan had a competent slip cordon, Akram would have ended up with couple of runs lower in terms of bowling average.
