England players and selection discussion thread

I think we also need to remember too how difficult it is to open the batting currently in test cricket or even CC1. Players like Buttler and Bairstow look a walking wicket in the top 5 never mind opening the batting. Roy was a shocker up top. Averaging 30 opening if you're English is almost like opening 45 at 4/5/6 I think currently. It's not just the new ball. The bowlers and fielders are infinitely fresher during the first over compared to specialist 5,6 or 7 batsmen that tend to come in when the bowlers are either tiring or tired - and most teams step it up a notch or two vs England. Burns's average doesn't look much, nor does Denly's. But there's more to it than meets the eye. They have almost only played on seamer friendly pitches their whole career, there's a reason a high calibre batter like Root's average has taken a sharp downturn lately year upon year and every team England plays against the openers struggle to make any runs at all. It's a nightmare to open right now. Root being reluctant to bat 3, Stokes possibly too high at 4. Opening the batting is no joke, nor is number 3. Most teams hide their best bat at 4. Shows even more how much of a monster Bradman was on uncovered pitches batting mostly 3 I guess and how good players like Sutcliffe actually were - yes the bowlers were different but all other things were harder for the batter.

I for one would be happy for Sibley to play. There's an argument however that Denly and Burns like batting together so if you pick Sibley maybe he should bat 3 or Denly can go there. Sibley should have been picked already, but it's hardly surprising when they picked Burns several years after when they should have.

i've seen talk pope shouldn't be asked to bat top 4 because he bats lower for his county and if that's the case then he shouldn't be near the team as a specialist batsman anyway. sheltered runs at fc level don't count.
I might be wrong but I think KP always batted at 5 before he got picked for England.

Dom Sibley is making a case for an opening spot this winter allowing Denly to drop to 3 and Root 4. Has anyone seen him bat? He is putting together the runs as a pleasing strike rate of around 50
Double hundred. A certainty for the winter tours for sure. Old fashioned opener.

324 runs for Sibley in the match which takes his FC average above 40. Surely nailed for the Winter tours. Squad named on Monday apparently.

England have announced the latest central contracts

Test and One Day to Archer, Bairstow, Buttler, Root, Stokes and Woakes

Test only for Anderson, Broad, Burns and S.Curran

One Day only for Ali, Denly, Morgan, Rashid, Roy and Wood

Incremental for T.Curran and Leach

Denly central contract, seems to suggest he is in for at least the winter then. He did grind out a few innings to be fair, but it is a bit of a strange decision all things considered.

Dom Sibley must be on the plane for sure.

Burns
Sibley
Denly
Root
Stokes
Pope
Buttler
Curran
Archer
Broad/Anderson
Leach

I'd have a look at something like that. Gives us variety with the ball, and I rate Dom & Pope.

Agreed with that, perhaps Foakes as keeper but generally it looks like a batting order with all the batsmen in the right places, not something England have done in recent years.

There is talk Buttler will take the gloves in New Zealand as they believe Bairstow isn't getting his full capability out with the bat and that is what they want him to focus on.

Good, hopefully he's dropped so we can get both Pope and Sibley into the team as I doubt we're going to drop Denly

I'm not sure that either is a good enough batsman at Test level to be played as a batsman. I think you have to decide which one is going to be your wicket-keeper and select him at No.7, and drop the other.

I'd pick Foakes over Buttler and Bairstow as wicketkeeper in a test match. Last time I'll say that (including last time I'll mention below that England have a highly unpredictable selection policy)

This is England we are talking about! They ignored Burns for an eternity . I do hope Sibley plays as I would have had him opening with Burns ages ago. Denly can bat 3.

Yeah, bit frustrating to have to move Denly again but 3 is probably ideal for the team. He's got lots of FC experience in that position too. Always felt it was bizarre that out of all the 3s England have forced into the position instead of Root, it was Denly who they decided to give a go at four; though he was arguably the most suitable person they'd picked to be the no.3 for a while (based on experience and FC record)
