Wow. Mayhem at Headingley today. Kent make nearly 500 in the day after being 39/5 early on with Darren Stevens smashing a double century at more than a run a ball with 9 sixes!

When I read Stevens would be released I did laugh. He's one of their best players. Rubbed their noses in it today. His bowling this season has been very good too.

Sky are showing the Somerset Essex game next week so it'll be good if the title is still up for grabs.

Wouldn't be surpised if Essex lose this game to Surrey. Seen a bit of the game and the bounce seems up and down. Probably spin more as the game goes on to.

With that in mind we could do with Hampshire beating Somerset here.

Would be a somewhat remarkable championship win by Somerset given their weakish batting lineup. Top of the batting averages are Bartlett, age 21, and Banton 20 although only low 30s batting average. Normal banker Hildreth averaging in the low 20s, Azhar Ali too low 20s. Tres dropped after averaging 10.75. It's obviously relative to the conditions they've played in, and the bowling figures are impressive (4 guys with more than 10 wickets averaging less than 20) but still it's surprising the batting has been as bad as it has and yet they are still challenging.

Regarding Lions cricket this winter I'd like to see Matt Fisher of Yorkshire there. Has been injury struck since he burst onto the scene as a 16 year old but still has enormous potential and needs some playing time.
Wouldn't be surprised if Rob Yates (age 19) of Warwickshire gets a callup too. Very well organised top order bat. Probably a little early though and more likely to be playing grade cricket in Australia though.
Luke Wood I think is a good shout too. Has been in and out of of the four day stuff and is moving to Lancs now. Left armer who swings the ball. 24 now so should be starting to find consistency. Has a bit more pace than the left armers England have like Curran and Willey. Can bat and field too.

Was at the Ageas Bowl today. Man what a strange game. Repeat of yesterday. Very green pitch, Glorious weather, but with the early start, & Hants bowlers were having a party early in the day. Kyle Abbott 9 wickets for 40! Dom Bess hung around for Somerset for a vital 37 off 98 balls, & looked pretty solid. Somerset bowlers then had their own party leaving Hants 45-6. James Vince hung tough early on & survived the carnage, gradually finding rythym & ending up scoring a very classy 102 & well supported by Kyle Abbott. That was a knock of some distinction by Vince who showed none of the frailties of his England performances. Good battle between him & Craig Overton later in the day. Somerset will need a wide bat in the morning.

Letting Hampshire recover from 5 for not many twice in the game is...not ideal. Big batting effort and some help from Surrey will be much appreciated, with the Taunton weather looking pretty dicey next week.

Surrey aren't looking too clever against Essex, more's the pity. Vince's innings has crated a real problem for Somerset unless the wicket has eased up considerably; 280 will take some chasing.

Vince batting at 5... which is where he should have been all along for England.

I feel like this is the sort of chase where the hope absolutely kills you. Always just in the realms of possibility, but ending up falling a long way short nonetheless.
