David Warner needs at least 27 in the second innings to have a chance of scoring more runs in the series then Steve Smith has hit fours.

David Warner needs 13 runs to avoid the worst 5-Test opening series since 1912

Really hating how statsguru searches now show a players series twice, once for their country series and once for their ICC test championship series

Clyde Walcott got 5 centuries and an 80 odd in a series.

Harvey, Chappell and Taylor are the only 3 Aussies to make 7 50+ scores in a series.

A 2nd innings 50 will add Smith to the above, give him 7000 Test runs and give him 800 runs for the series.

Thought it was time to tone down the expectations

Poor old Doug could hardly buy a run in England. Came on 4 tours and never made a century. Averaged in the mid 20’s.

And prior England performances ended Dougie's career. Despite being in good form in 1980/81, wasn't chosen for 1981 tour. They took Trevor Chappell and Dirk Whellam instead.

Walters' first tour in England was in '68, where he averaged 38.1, having averaged 127 and 68 the previous two Australian seasons. His subsequent averages in England were 7.7, 31.3, and 24.8, coming after Australian seasons of 37.3, 42.6 and 59.6 respectively.

This makes for a total England average of 25.7.

Yes, he did average 56.7 in 80/81 (against NZ and India, in Australia), but the pattern is quite clear.


Of course, one could question the replacements (Welham played 1 test and Chappell 3 (for 15.8), so someone else had to fill that gap in the remaining two, presumably), but Keith was not getting younger and quicker.

Funny how Doug Walters is famous for having a shocking average in England, however his 25.68 is way better than Warner, Bancroft, Harris, Khawaja, Wade and Marsh have this series, and only slightly worse than Heads 27, who was dropped anyway.

Assuming Pat Cummins bowls today it’ll be the 7th day in row. Not sure if it’s anything like a record, but it feels like it should be a bit unusual.

EDIT. Another Australian bowler might have done it along side him here but that would mean research.

I think Terry Alderman matched that in 1981; Days 2, 3, 4 and 5 at Leeds followed by days 1, 2 & 3 at Edgbaston.
Albeit very briefly on Days 2 and 5 at Leeds, but he did bowl.

Chappell and Taylor both did this in 6 match series. Smith has only played 4.

Two people have done 7 in 8 (Hendren and Gavaskar) and three people have done 6 in 7 (Weekes, Chanderpaul and Rahul). Hendren's only score of under 50 was an undefeated innings.
