Australian test selection 2019-2020

I see Jason Roy. More specifically I see him as proof that makeshift openers at test level are a terrible idea.
England at least has Denly. Who's done ok recently up the order. Our "openers" have batted like no.11s. Courtney Walsh, Chandra level no. 11s. Look if we had Joe Burns available I'd pick him. But we don't. So what else have we got? Flush the same turds around the bowl again or try another kind of crap. What's there to do if you don't want to see Warner owned by Broad again? You've already seen how that's going to turn out so its a reasonable position to say that he should be dropped. You can't really go back to Bancroft. I mean you could but if he has the same flaws that lead him to be dropped then i'd find it hard to convince myself to pick him.

That leaves Khawaja and in he comes for mine. he's been bad too but of all the top order players and lefties I think he can handle Broad and Archer the best. So that just leaves one spot: Harris. I think that Harris, as well as Bancroft and Warner have been batting Roy level of bad. No better than make shift themselves. Who else is there? There's just one game and we've at least retained the Ashes. Wade comes in.

All this is based on having Marsh at six because he just ... its a long shot ... could be useful at the Oval. He might score some runs and relieve our bowlers. Especially Cummins because I don't want to go into a test without him.

So yes, its a desperate suggestion to have Wade open. But realistically and given the poor alternatives, it has to be considered imo.

I am never a believer in trying things just for the sake of it selection wise, Wade will never be a long term opening option, no where near tight enough for that, so trying it for one test is not worth it imo. Would reluctantly stick with the same garbage we have now, just because of lack of any better option.

Desperately hope Marsh doesn't play, like going in with 10 and a half players. The extra bowling will be useful but his batting is an absolute liability.

I really don't get the David Warner dropping viewpoint. It's quite clear that one particular bowler has his number. It happens. He scored runs just over a month ago, albeit in a different format. The alternatives are rubbish - and that includes Khajawa, and certainly Wade. He also scored 60 odd in an innings where most couldn't lay bat on it a couple of Tests ago. He's going to get the summer, and he should.

Trouble is though he's playing against the bowler who has his number. Its just for one test and simply because every other option has failed. Aus should be in a better spot in the summer with Warner at home and away from Broad. Plus we'll have Burns competing for a spot too.

Apart from Uzi, the only middle order player that I can see making a half decent job of opening is Paine as at least he´s got a decent technique and could potentially hang around for a while

Interesting really. I would hate to see Wade opening, completely hate actually, would rather Bancroft back.

Re: Marsh and the 10 1/2 players. Is Warner worth 1/2 a player right now? Warner has credit in the bank, but his role in the sandpaper gate and therefore lack of red ball cricket runs, his weakness vs Broad and the fact he is nearing 33 means the credit might soon only be available for use in Australia moving forward. His record away of 74 innings 5 100s @ 33.85 is ordinary.

I'd rather Neser or Pattinson as the all rounder than Marsh. Way better with the ball and not sacrificing much with the bat unless it's a highway, in which case the runs aren't needed as much as the bowling.

Marsh is just not worth the space in the side when you have better batting and bowling and all round options available.

I suspect that he used up most of his brownie points getting a spot

Now averages 27 in England from 12 tests

Is being a ftb at 33 enough to make him a lock for next summer

Not in my book

I think he should be a heavy favourite to start next summer, but he shouldn't be playing this Test. No way, no how.

All these 50:50 blokes will just be praying they get the home summer. NZ will be competitive but the decks should be flattish so there's opportunities, and then Pakistan arrive, who are just hapless water buffaloes when they cross the equator and travel down here.

Pakistan comes first IIRC.

I think Perth will be very bowler friendly (especially given it's apparently a D/N - which is bizarre for a Perth Test), but the other two are flat yeah.

What a thrilling introduction to a golden summer that will be.
