Appropriate for the softest batting line up around.

Wasn't around for the 90s, but surely this lot are worse than any of them?
Way worse. That side at least had guys like Atherton, Thorpe, Stewart, even Hussain, who are all well ahead of any English bat that isn't Root. I also feel like Hick would do better in today's climate too.

Good captaincy is at least 70 or 80% about having good players.

The coaching is a bigger issue when you look at the performances with the bat. The England test side will have a chance to start anew this winter regardless of whether Root stays as captain.
Yep.

Another 25% is making sure that your own performance doesn't drop, or at least not by too much. 5% tactics, man-management (i.e. not being a **** that everyone hates) and ****.

They probably are tbh. Though it’s arguable this attack is better than Australia’s of that era, in terms of relentlessness

All set up for a Capetown 2011 repeat from Australia
Alas this time we don't even have enough to be annoyed that we let them score a few cheap runs at the end which meant they didn't have to follow on. Would probably have won that game by an innings if we had

The scorecard looks like something from the 1880s where the Wisden almanac report said it rained overnight on an uncovered pitch.
