For sure. Losing Anderson was a blessing coz I'm not sure Archer gets a gig otherwise this test, Woakes is the Lords specialist and Broad is part of the furniture at this point

That is interesting. Lord's changed a bit but the fact remains as long as Australia win another Test they'll win the Ashes (unless draw is a completely different category). Which still looks very viable to me.

This is just the series bet, retaining the ashes is a separate bet. The draw is one of the options. I guess the draw looming as a lot more likely now then before the series started a big factor

Might have been less effective than Archer against Smith though

1-0 up with 3 to play, I think Australia should just pick XI batsmen and play for the draw.

No point trying to win with a Smith-less lineup.

So I presume Smith will miss this one so we have to be strong favourites to win it. If we don't then the series chance is gone. Same side for England unless the Woakes niggle is too bad.

Yeah fully agree. My point was more in reference to Archer for Anderson being a blessing.

Personally hope we do get to see Anderson and Archer share the new ball this series.

That's probably right. 1978/79 springs to mind as a possible alternative; despite looking good on paper, England's batsmen struggled all series. Maybe 1981 too. That looks silly when you see Gower and Gooch in the line-up, but they were as out of form as Root is at present. And Australia's bowling was way superior to their batting in both series. But hand on heart I couldn't really argue with Spark's call.

Irrelevant. There's no argument that Smith has been the bigger loss in the context of the series. Highly likely cost Australia this game, and if he missed next game it is much harder for Aus to replace Smith than it is for England to replace Anderson (with Woakes, Broad, Archer they don't really lose much)

unfortunately for you per the concussion sub rules you can't replace someone just for being a dumbass

Woakes averages 22 inn England at a strike rate of 43. That's crazy good. His away average stinks though. But I for one would be very happy if he wasn't picked for the rest of the series.

Both sides batting is terrible to state the obvious

England should be dropping Roy and Denly but the best players in county cricket all failed in the matches last night. Sibley, Ballance and Northeast. So I am not sure whether England should pick Sibley and Northeast anyway, probably they should but I doubt it is going to happen.

Australia should bring Harris in for Bancroft and Labuschagne should replace Smith. Warner is also a liability at the moment but at least he has previous proven to be a good test match batsman.
