Would Sachin Tendulkar not be considered as an ATG if he didn’t win the World Cup 2011?
He would not (still is not, imo) worth a place in an AT ODI side because of his propensity to under perform in finals. That’s my view anyway.

As for this point jimmy is making about being unlucky, that’s most definitely true, but Virat in particular seems to be consistently unlucky in WC KOs for a player of his ability. Could it be that maybe he’s taken the gas?

Even “mighty” Viv Richards flopped at the 1975 World Cup Final, 1983 World Cup Final, 1985 Benson and Hedges semifinal and WI didn’t even qualify for the 1987 WC semi final.

Does that mean even the legendary Richards wasn’t as great as his stats suggest?

Kohli has been unlucky so far. Even Sachin didn’t perform in the 2 WC finals though India won the second time.

Consistently failing in big games isn't just being "unlucky"

Burgey is an extremist, but you can go too far the other way and pretend that big game performances are irrelevant and completely down to luck, which is equally untrue

Nah, in my memory Viv always won the car in the aussie summer tri-series...that's real pressure to keep that up every year

He tonned up in the 79 final ffs.

I get it, you’re happy with these blokes in your side - fine. Opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one. Your side will dominate a bilateral series on featherbeds and make big scores doing it. Good luck to you and them. Mine will win WC finals. Just because I place a greater emphasis on that than the 1998 Singer Trophy in Sharjah featuring a full strength Zimbabwe doesn’t mean either of us is empirically wrong.

Though my side win a final every time. Yours will nick off for about 130.

Kohli’s been unlucky. In every WC finals game? You’re flat out shitting me aren’t you? He’s barely troubled the ****ing scorers time and time and time again in them. Give over mate. He’s gassed up.

I expected him to dominate the WC just gone and confirm himself as the best odi player ever. But just when, despite being middling by his standards all tourney, he had the chance to win a vital game for his side, he kicked a straight one and went with a whimper, not a bang. Again.

The 4 greatest indian ODI cricketers (Kapil, Dhoni,Sachin and Kohli) have all been WC winners and have all made good contributions in global tournaments which India has won.

Kapil - Great contributions in WC 1983 and World Championship of cricket 1985
Dhoni - WC Final 2011
Sachin - 2nd highest run scorer in WC 2011
Kohli - Good contribution in WC final 2011 and highest run scorer in Champions trophy final 2013.

On the other hand, there is a celebrated cricketer who averages 18 odd with the bat in WCs with a solitary half century against mighty Zimboks. He went on to win WC of course piggy riding on the back of others. Guess who ?

Once Fred orders his list I suppose we'll wrap things up as he's the only one who's submitted in the last 10 days or so

It's gonna be a top 46 countdown I've decided. The biggest yet. Why not

You know what this thread really needs?

2 more pages of Burgey explaining his views on the importance of ODI finals.

I don't think we have had enough of that tbh

What we really need is an extrapolation of why you're a ****. And, of course another 450 posts worth of "Yay Sachin, Yay Virat" filled analysis that's 1.2 billion people wide and an inch deep.

My dude, where the **** did Kohli go at the WCs in 2015 and 2019? He's had mediocre tourneys at the back end both times. I realise everyone has their own metrics, but no one is going to GAF in 20 years time that he scored X tons in meaningless bilaterals. He's spudded up in consecutive WCs, and if he doesn't fix that next time around, he's going to go down as India's Amla (or 2nd Tendulkar, come to that). God-like in between when it doesn't matter and conspicuously mortal when it does.
tbf he wasn't the one who brought it up
The above post brought it up.

I would love to see a WC final where a bloke blazes 200 but ends up on the losing side. Be a hell of a game. It isn't going to happen. But to answer your question, yes I would value it.
I think this is an endless argument, Burgey. We can agree to disagree yet again to avoid several pages of discussing the same thing. :)

Wait are you saying it's repetitive posting? That's quite a serious accusation you know
