And Lillee and Thomson didn't really destroy England and WI in 74-75, they were just lucky home town bully's that their opposition couldn't replicate, therefor they must have been crap lol

Their 75/76 averages were actually pretty mediocre. Lillee averaged 26.37, Thomson 28.66, which isn't that great.

I do agree that the Lillee ranking is weird as hell. The reasons given I guess are fair, but it still feels weird. FWIW when DoG did all-time bowling rankings he came out in 9th.

I actually think all rankings are flawed due to the dealing of WSC. Even ICC rankings treated Lillee and Chappell as if they were dropped from the team for more than 2 years, so basically they had to start their career rankings again in 79/80

It's an algorithm. What's the point of it if it doesn't contradict preconceived notions? Lillee being that far down is weird as hell, I agree but it's rethinking our opinions because of it.

Benaud is 18th on the list. His average comes down to 24. Fair enough considering how flat Australian and West Indian pitches were back then. Think he averaged just over 30 in those countries. 39 in England though. SA were reasonably strong and he did well against them home and away. Did some minnow bashing Vs India and Pakistan too. All things considered, I suppose he did really well to take almost 4 wickets per match. Look at the strike rates of Bedi, Gibbs and the like.

Like I said, longegevity is a big part of the algorithm...this goes against all WSC players and pre-WW2 players for that matter. Would be interesting to see how much higher Lillee, Chappell, Richards and Bradman rank without the longegevity handicap

The rating system does very well overall. I don't see the point in nitpicking anomalies like WSC. There's going to be no perfect and consisting way of accounting for that.

I think the better option would be suggesting that perhaps the inclusion of WSC averages would make for a better model, rather than calling the entire system 'laughable' because it underrates one bowler you like.

Lillee's WSC stats + the benefits of longevity probably close a lot of the gap. But it's also possible that we are, in fact, slightly overrating Lillee.

As say many of the people that never actually saw him bowl live lol. Can anyone seriously say that Siddle is a better bowler than Lillee, by 30 places even...that is what is flawed

If those averages aren't great they are close to it. Consider the batsmen they were up against and the fact they were responsible for a 5-1 drubbing.

i was under the impression modern pitches, bats and batsmen were all unfair to bowlers so maybe siddle and modern bowlers should get massive credit compared to the green top bullies of yesteryear who bowled to batsmen who could hold their spots with averages of 35-40 on favourable pitches without modern helmets, bats, protective gear etc etc?

Standardised average = 17.90 on the lastest update 13/1/19

Since then he has taken 21/225 in three test matches at an average of 10.7 bringing his average down from 24.51 to 21.64 so I guess his standardised average would be even lower now.
