The umpire stands behind the glove, so the positioning of the glove can affect the perception of where the ball passed the mound. It's called "framing", and everyone knew it mattered a bit. But when technology started tracking balls they discovered that the best framers were adding far, far more value than any other catchers.

I'm not a huge baseball fan. Someone else might know more.
