Mahela-Sanga make merry
12 wickets had fallen for 183 runs before Mahela Jayawardene joined Kumar Sangakkara in the middle. Over the next 942 deliveries, South Africa were left chasing leather. The previous record, 576 between Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama, at the R Premadasa stadium was sent into oblivion. Jayawardene made 374, the highest score by a Sri Lankan batsman. Sangakkara made 287, and by the time he was finally dismissed, the pair had realised 638 runs for the third wicket. Needless to say, Sri Lanka romped home on the final afternoon.
