Shades of Eddie Hemmings’ 95 for the Poms vs Australia at Sydney in 83.It reminds me of Alex Tudor's match-winning 99* against New Zealand in 1999. iirc he batted at number 3 as a night-watchman and made what should have been a challenging chase look easy.
That’s a cop out. Justifying poor batting with ‘that’s just the way we play’ is so awfulYou can't really slag your team's test batting if they're dominating ODIs for the same reasons they're sucking at tests. It's the same personnel and the divergence between what makes a good one day batsman and a good test batsman is greater than ever. It's just about priorities and you could argue it has paid off. Every time Bairstow goes out to bat he can't switch modes on his muscle memory and temperament depending on format. Even Root's glorious ton in SL last year was a rapid fire knock. One day mode is going to get them 300 regardless of the format usually, with the odd 85 all out every now and then. I was really hoping for Burns to do well. Hope he comes good soon.
Yeah you can't say that. They're different forms of the game for a reason. It's like saying "it's ok that we batted out a T20 and made 0/30 because that's how we play in Tests". No you played a **** T20 if you did that. That’s a cop out. Justifying poor batting with ‘that’s just the way we play’ is so awful
There's something special about a nightwatchman making runs. Always a good time.Preparing for disappointment to be crushing.
That said a little sad Leach didn't get a ton.
Pitches were flatter back when the Aussies were dominating, plus their dominance was built around their bowlers. Their batting did look a bit different between formats too - Langer being a test specialist, Symonds and Bevan mostly playing ODIs, Gilly shifting between opening and batting 7, M Waugh shifting between opening and batting in the middle. S Waugh played on as a Test specialist for a while. So basically only the golden era Aussies ever have well and truly mastered the modern game across formats (not counting T20s because those came to prominence after the gang disbanded).
That's a good point though. England finally have the WC. Fans ought to go a little easy on their Test failures in the immediate future.
Root told Bairstow to review it, just after he had run out Denly. Also dropped a catch in the slips off Broad. I have no faith in Root as captain.Just watching the highlights of the part of the game I missed earlier.
Root! FFS! That was a shocker - the run out of Denly and his now infamous hoiking with a marshmallow bat.
No surprise King Pairstow used up the review.
It's all good fun. I think the England batting coach likes a Guinness or 2 before work.
Batting on the first morning was difficult but not impossibleI haven't watched a bll of this match thus far, but has the pitch settled down now into something easier to bat on? I see from the comments on here that the thinking seems to be a lot of the England second innings wickets had nothing really to do with the deck. Is that fair comment, because if it's flattened out that much and Ireland knock ove r the last wicket to chase around 200, they're only one decent partnership from winning. Should be a thrilling denouement.
