Stead deserves to be fired after this World Cup if he continues to persist with Munro. Period

It will never happen (see Luke Ronchi, Colin Munro and Tim Southee) but Tom Latham probably needs to go after this World Cup. Averages 27 over the last two years, you’d be better off playing Seifert or Phillips up the top of the order.

As I said he probably had another two years of under preforming before he’s even close to being dropped.

Make Munro captain for namesake
Can we make him a non-playing captain please?

This has the feel of a banana skin game for NZ to me. I agree with those saying bring in Nicholls, Blundell and Southee for Munro, Latham and Henry. We really need Sodhi to get a game soon too, imo.

What about Latham to open and Nicholls at 5? Latham seems to be struggling with the pressure of coming in and having to boost the run rate. Maybe a more defensive role to see off the likes of Amir or Starc would suit him better atm.

A #5 typically comes in earlier than we expected and may be needed for a rebuilding role. No harm in trying out Nicholls at 5.

Did suggest this before, but tbf he looked all at sea against Chris Morris at Edgbaston, unusually so for a test opener.

He's still the best option in the middle order against quality spin and you need a guy like him to come out when it's 80 for 3. The problem at Old Trafford was it was a death overs scenario and they really should have sent in Neesham and CdG ahead of him.

Nicholls also an option for this role but he's less adept at rotating the strike IMO.

What's wrong with Henry?
Lack of variations, and tends to go into deer-in-headlights mode against big hitters towards the end of the innings. Excellent with the new ball for the most part.

Would have him over Southee in the first XI 9 times out of 10. Watching the game at Lords yesterday something tells me Southee would really enjoy bowling there vs the Aussies, so I'm advocating his inclusion from a horses for courses perspective, and also against Pakistan to give him some game time.

Not disagreeing with your overall summation on Henry and of his weaknesses, but seriously, why are we pretending Southee's been anything except for awful ever since his 7-fer vs. England in the 2015 world cup? Check his record since then, and I'm certain both his average and ER are much worse than Henry's.

Purely my gut feel after watching yesterday's ENG-AUS game, and his regular habit of coming back with a strong performance after a kick in the backside. On post-2015 performances, will concede he has no business being in the squad let alone the first XI.

It's more a matter of when it happens. Southee will generally give you 1/50's which isn't good but at least he won't really have a 0/80 which Henry is more than capable of.

I think almost all of us here would have preferred Bennett or Kuggs (well not everyone wanting Kuggs) in the squad at the expense of Southee.

"Let's go for the guy we expect to be mediocre" - is not a good selection policy.

He has actually gone at over 8s in 2 out of his last 8 ODIs (25%).

Absolutely, or even a fit Milne I suppose. I'm probably reading too much into one game, but at Lord's (where NZ will take on Australia this Saturday) yesterday, the conditions were perfect for the sort of stuff Southee usually dishes out (it was mentioned at least a few times in the match thread that Jimmy Anderson would have enjoyed himself). And he has done very well at the venue before. So I wouldn't mind if NZ were to take a calculated gamble in playing him for that game, maybe even for today's game. Of course it's entirely possibly he'll waste favourable conditions like Archer did yesterday, and Henry himself could be a threat if it plays that way.

Putting aside off field issues (my opinion there should be known by now) I am honestly not convinced Kuggelejin would add much, he has never been an especially economical bowler. I don't much rate either Henry or Southee as ODI bowlers but Kuggelejin is absolutely not the answer.
