but he was the same all summer, too slow of a starter to bat 6. looked great at 3 and 4 when he had the chances.

Actually par is probably closer to 280. Really hard deck to get yourself in on and one that still has demons for set batsmen.

The problem being is that it was basically just Australia getting lucky with a hot streak, rather than him being out of form. This is his normal level.
