Thirimanne has to have one of the worst records of any batsmen ever to play that many Tests. Outside of BD maybe. Disgusting average.
His ODI average is actually semi-okay. His strike rate though is dogshit, goes at 70-odd. That's 1990s standard.

Back in 2012-2015 (when ODIs were still decent) he played the anchor role well, often holding the middle order together after Sanga, MJ and Dilshan were gone, but his test record never recovered from a poor start.

They've let this slip, almost looked like they've played for rain since about the 15th over.
On the face of it, 160 odd to get with 21 overs and 8 wickets in hand isn't a bad position to be in for a chasing side, but after the start they had, it certainly feels like it. They've completely lost momentum here.

This is so ****ing frustrating, they are acting like they are up with the rate. Don't they know Starc has a quarter of the overs left of the innings?

Yeah I don't get it. Maxwell has almost bowled out, as has Dorf. Those are the two most obvious targets, surely

Maybe they go on to win, but this is poor game sense. Adapt to the team you are playing and the situation don't just bat in template ffs.

Mendis has decided he's getting back in form I guess, Dimuth probably feels he needs to bat until we're within around 70 runs of the target, Mendis has led us through some famous chases in tests and ODIs, but yeah someone needs to kick on here, thinking Thisara or Udana could come in next, Matthews is another slow starter

About time

edit: even then they didn't hit the RRR for that over because there were so many dots

Mendis and Thirimanne have played poor innings here. Letting the weaker bowlers go through their overs without being expensive. Not the best of strategies. Is the rest of the lineup capable of chasing run rate of 8+ ? Not so sure.

They might not be in form, but Matthews, Thisara and Udana are well capable of achieving such a rate, I'd back Mendis to catch up too
