Just read a crap article where Harris was asked how he felt about Warner clipping at his heels for the Ashes...he answered correctly by saying Warner is already there, however how is Harris considered so much above Burns

Harris - 6T, 327 runs @ 32.70, 2 fifties, 0 hundreds, FC average of 37.71

Burns - 16T, 1123 runs @ 40.10, 4 fifties, 4 hundreds, FC average of 40.24

He's not quite as good as his stats suggest. Watching him play for Queensland he seems to trigger batting collapses when the ball is doing a bit. He's probably least suited to English conditions.

Having said that he's done more in one test than Harris did in 6, so he deserves more chances.

Yeah tbf though he has made big runs against some ordinary teams on flat wickets in his Test career so far, and generally failed when the going gets a little bit tough. Not that he's really played in many tough conditions, IIRC. Seems to have missed out on the more challenging tours to Asia/SA etc. and keep getting picked for home Tests against NZ/WI/SL etc, and made a big ton away against weak NZ.

looking at the stats that seems to be the case. Played 11 of his 16 tests at home and mostly against weak sides. The only typically challenging games he played in (vs SA and away vs SL) he failed miserably.

It's perfectly understandable why people feel hesitant about his chances in England

Hard for Burns to prove his worth overseas without getting a consistent run at it. He was poor against Sri Lanka and was dropped, since then he has been in and out of the team almost indiscriminately. Can't blame him for having a bad time in that Joburg test, flying in to an absolute crisis can't be easy at all.

Ultimately I am completely undecided on Burns V Harris, both have strengths and weaknesses of their own, it should probably be decided by form between now than then.

Harris has a shield average is over 50 in the 3 seasons since he moved to Victoria. He clearly has improved a lot as a player.

It is an interesting question. I thought he looked good in the first couple of tests he played but then got worse and was struggling. If he is chosen for the first test then I hope he gets two tests before he is dropped. Same would apply to Burns. Give either of them a couple of tests which allows them to work on their game between tests as well.

TBF most of his top edges go about 14 rows back on the postage stamps they play on in England. But I agree he hasn't looked convincing imo. Then again, Burns doesn't fill me with a lot of hope either. I'd probably run with Joe, at least partially on the basis he's right handed. Neither of them probably deserves to be dropped, but I actually think Warner is going to have a very large Ashes series this time around. Has a lot to prove and he's an ornery **** so I can see him firing up massively.

So apparently Joe Burns has had chronic fatigue since spring last year. Played the entire Australian summer with it and his returning from county cricket was due to it.

Apparently his particular variety reduces a person's capacity by around 50%. Puts his great performances last summer in a new light. I can't see him making the ashes squad with this though.

Yeah you'd think that would rule him out of contention. Shame for him, he deserved a spot.

So which other opener/ top order player might they look to bring on tour? Will probably be a sandgroper.

Wow about Joe Burns. The guy can't seem to get a break, however if last season was at 50%, can't wait to see him back healthy.

Potential openers dropping like flies. Renshaw dropped from county, Burns illness and Bancroft now averaging only 29 after his 18 yesterday

I would have Khawaja as the back up opener for Warner and Harris if Burns is not in the squad, which seems to be almost certain.
Bancroft is not playing well and Renshaw totally out of form.
I am not sure Daniel Hughes is good enough to be selected but he would be next in line after them if they want a third specialist opening batsman.

With Burns illness it is between Bancroft and Harris and it'll almost certainly default to Harris.

It's so awful that we have had an entire year for another opener to cement their position and for one reason or another none of them have managed it.

Renshaw really missing a trick by being woeful all summer.
