Who was an ATG FC cricketer

Same with Ken Barrington. His test record is way higher than his FC stats. It's odd
Barrington played for Surrey for quite a few years in the 1950s before becoming an England regular. I think his first class record in this period was pretty mediocre. It would be interesting to compare his Test and first class records in the period he was actually playing for England.

Although it’s small sample sizes, David Steele and Clive Radley averaged 42 and 48 in Tests but low 30’s in First Class cricket. Steele’s 8 Tests were all against very strong fast bowling attacks.
David Lloyd is similar IIRC, but his Test average is due to one huge innings.

C.B. Fry had a truly phenomenal first class record for the time in which he played (better than Hobbs, Trumper and Hill), but his Test record is middling at best.

FC exc Tests 29,663 @ 51.40
Tests 1,223 @ 32.18

George Hirst has to be one of the very best first class cricketers of all time but he didn't really cut it in Tests.

FC exc tests: 35,566 runs @ 34.53 and 2,683 wickets @ 18.48
Tests: 1,223 runs @ 22.57 and 59 wickets @ 30.00

I only just realised that if you take out Test cricket records, you may see a completely different cricketer.

Examples:

Mark Waugh scored 18,826 runs @ 58.10 if you ignore his test record of 8,029 runs @ 41.81

Richie Benaud would walk into Australia's current side as a batsman given his FC batting average of 41.20 excluding Tests

Keith Miller scored 11,225 runs @ 53.45 and took 327 wkts @ 21.96 outside of Test cricket, surely the greatest FC allrounder ever?

Who else?
Martin Crowe >19000 runs @ 56 (including his lower Test average in the mid 40s).

First Class Debutant
Thilan Samaraweera's bowling
FC 342 wickets @ 22.45
Tests 15 wickets @ 45.93

But test match and FC batting average almost the same.

Ken Barrington's batting averages are completely absurd; 36.92 for the British Army, 39.87 in the County Championship, 45.63 in first-class cricket, 58.67 in Test cricket and 63.96 against Australia. The better the bowlers, the easier he found it.

Barrington scored 24,908 runs @ 43.01 in first class cricket excluding Tests. He first played for Surrey in 1953 and established himself in the England side in 1959. His first class record between 1953 and 1958 (excluding Tests) was 7,308 runs @ 33.83, which gives him a FC record excluding Tests in the period after he established himself in the England side of 17,600 runs @ 48.48. So he averaged 10 more runs in Tests than in first class across the period of his Test career, but his FC average over this period was pretty decent (Viv Richards FC career average excluding Tests is very similar).

Yeah and it's not even like Indian cricket where there's 30 FC teams so the standard isn't great. SA domestics is quite good cricket. Always felt weird to me he never truly cracked Tests, especially given there were plenty of times he looked great out in the middle.
It’s Bevanesque

There are 2 levels to FC cricket in SA aren't there - wonder what his split between the good and bad level is.

He's only played 10 matches for Western Province and it's worth noting he played pre-2004 (before the SA FC split happened) so most of it comes from proper stuff.

In any case he averages 60 for Cape Cobras and 58 for Western Province so it doesn't have any real effect on his average.

It was at the higher level.... definitely one of the most talented and disappointing Test level players SA has produced.

The standard of First Class Cricket in England since the introduction of Central Contracts has not been that great. The International players rarely play and instead of one (and in the past two or three) dedicated overseas stars playing a season you get a few dropping in when they've got nothing else to do and third rate Zimbabwe all rounders. Kolpak has enabled a few decent players to play but also a load of dross. Kolpak might not survive Brexit - but then none of us might.

Ramprakash likely the last ever batsman to reach 100 FC centuries. Can't see Cook getting there. Langer and Chanderpaul got close but fell short. Have no idea who from the current crop would play enough red ball cricket to have a shot. Maybe Gary Ballance if he plays forever.

Rohit Sharma is another case worth mentioning. Averaged 61.44 in FC matches outside tests. In tests, averages 85 at home. Never cut it away from home though.

Rajinder Goel and Padmakar Shivalkar averaged 18.58 and 19.69 respectively with the ball. Neither got a look in in tests due to their career coinciding with the spin quartet of 1960s and 70s.
