Yeah, the bowlers have been fine since Jurgensen took over. It's hard to know how much of the 15/16 bowling malaise should be put down to a) injury; b) quality of opposition (7 of the 9 matches were played against Australia and England); c) Wagner falling out of fashion and rarely getting selected; or d) Mascarenhas's term as bowling coach.

The Wagner thing was so weird ... match-winning performance against India ... what seemed like one so-so test ... and dropped for years. In the middle of a bowling injury crisis, no less.

I think that was the start of Larsen’s reign as selector, wasn’t it?

This is where I would have preferred Seifert over Blundell. Put Seifert into open with Guptill and Nicholls at 5.

Would be okay with Seifert as a batsman, but there's no way his keeping (in its present form) should be risked in a 50-over World Cup.

Hopefully this Latham non-availability wouldn't affect things too much against Sri Lanka but otherwise far from ideal going forward. Will need him and his ability against spin for the Bangladesh and Afghanistan matches too.

Blundell is a disgusting selection, it reeks of clear bias. This is a guy who literally did nothing in domestic cricket last season, or for NZ A and here he is going to the World Cup and with a year long contract to boot. And why? Because Seifert suffered an injury that has already healed. Larsen just continues to prove what a joke he is.

Look out world New Zealand have Tom Blundell strolling to the crease @ 5. 230 is on the cards.

it wasn't a great pick, in fact it was bad but when the only other keeper we selected this summer is woeful with the gloves and only had a couple of good knocks with the bat we had to consider a punt. i would have gone with watling (experienced player) or cleaver (good domestic one day batsman) if cleaver can catch.

i still think we should just encourage seifert to become a specialist batsman. he's really good in the shield. someone will probably numbers me but i've been impressed with his adaptability to match situations.

I think calling Seifert woeful is a bit of a stretch... sure he's not in the class of Watling/Latham but he's not terrible.

If anyone, that'd be on the sports psychologist. If only we could regularly produce players who score runs in the hard times and don't cash in their Cricinfo stat chips for the flat decks and tiring attacks.

Losing Latham is gutting. All for seifert to be included on standby but i don't see him faring well as an opener like brand suggested...for some reason i can't see him standing up to the likes of bumrah shami, rabada steyn starc cummins archer with a new ball.

Seifert's issues with the gloves are really quite shocking. You know when the poor standard of your keeping is evident in T20's, you've got problems.

I wouldn't mind taking on Seifert as a long term punt in ODI's in a regular year, but in a World Cup year there's just too much risk that his brick hands will cost us a la McCullum's drop of Dravid off Bond in 2003.
