His opinions are bad but tonight I think his biggest problem was just talking far too much. Incessant bollocks is so much more annoying than the odd sprinkling of bollocks. I was craving Benaud-esque silence.
I find this to be a problem with most colour commentators/pundits to be honest. Though Steve McManaman is the absolute worst in this regard. Literally cannot stay silent for more than 2-3 seconds.

I mean by ‘better’ you would need to be thinking in a sort of football-as-art way. If you picked Bergkamp first in the schoolyard everyone would laugh at you and then you’d lose.
Yeah sure, but you could say the same about picking Xavi over Duncan Ferguson.

It would depend on what the rest of my team was like, but tbh I can't think of many midfielders in my lifetime I'd rather have than Xavi if my goal was to maximise my team's chances of winning.

Bergkamp was more of a number 10 though.

Yeah I wasn't comparing Xavi and Bergkamp ftr. Just saying Xavi is both a very artistic and very effective footballer in one.

I actually don't think this Ajax side is that stacked with future superstars. de Jong and de Ligt are obviously destined for the top, but a lot of their best players are guys like Blind and Tadic who have played in the PL before without ever being regarded as more than decent. Ziyech is 26 and been getting linked with Arsenal/Spurs/Liverpool level clubs for years. van der Beek and Neres are 22 but from what I've seen I'd say they're just good players rather than greats in the making. Their strengths seems more to be their chemistry and play style than individual brilliance. Not sure that United or whoever poaching a couple of these guys would necessarily solve their issues.

Also think with Sanchez it's easy to look at it with hindsight and assume signing him was always going to be a disaster, but it's not really true. Sure with the wages and age it was always a questionable deal, but he's had one of the sharpest declines I've ever seen for a top player. His last full season at Arsenal was the best of his career and there were many Arsenal fans that preferred the idea of losing him on a free than selling him for £50m, if it meant we had him for another year. Then he went to United and his shooting numbers and creative stats halved almost instantly, and suddenly he wasn't even a first XI quality player anymore, let alone one of the best players in the league which he was at Arsenal.

He'd probably be on 40 for the season if Pep got him.

The rest of the Prem should be thanking our selflessness............
If LVG had been given more time, its quite likely he would have snapped some of these guys up.

Have said it many times in the thread already but he would have been great for us. Would've played all over the front 5 and not expected to do the work Mourinho wanted him to do. Would've played a similar role to Aguero.

I wonder if Arsenal still feel the swap for Mkhitaryan was a better deal than just taking the 55(+5)m City had on the table. Mkhitaryan is the same age as Sanchez and not really doing anything for them, and wont fetch any sort of fee if they want to move him on. With how much they've been crying broke that 55m might have made a big difference. Would've gotten them someone better than Mustafi, for certain.

Just had a look at the Ajax side which lost to United in the 2017 Europa League Final. Most of them are still there. United almost literally stared potential in the face and bought Sanchez.
The two they sold that summer to Everton and Spurs were huge successes NOT.

Would imagine this side will be ripped apart like Monaco were this summer but the academy will produce another team in a few years.

I didn't really mean that to be taken so literally.

Henry was just much better. He was pretty great at all the subtle technical stuff that everyone loves about Bergkamp, but with far, far more end product.
