Tom Latham to captain the depleted NZ squad that's going to OZ before the world cup

I know these are just considered warm-up games with the IPL players missing, but selfishly, I wouldn't mind seeing it played as an official series. Just to see Will Young actually play an international and for the stats porn.

Could understand those players involved in the IPL being allowed to remain in India if they had a packed schedule. But no one, not even Kane, is actually getting any game time there. Santner's winning last ball six yesterday may make him the exception.

Agreed, I've barely watched any IPL this year, mainly because of the extreme lack of Kiwi presence. Rather have them cut it short and warm up in OZ with the other lads.

I know in the context of what happened in Sri Lanka a cricket tour is pretty unimportant, but I wonder if we’ll go there after the World Cup. Only about 3 months till we go there, and it’s our first ICC Test Championship matches. And we’re usually fairly conservative when it comes to security situations. I wonder what happens if we say we won’t go, but Sri Lankan cricket authorities don’t agree... guessing if there’s a mutual agreement to not tour, the pints will be shared.

Plus there’s a 3 match T20I series to think about. And that’s certainly very serious... yeah...

Hmm, would think international matches in Sri Lanka might be on hold for a little while ... probably longer than three months.

You would think so. But I guess I wonder what happens if the SLCB say “no you can come play”, and NZC day it isn’t happening. The attacks appear to have focused on tourists and Christians. And as might be theorised, a well known “white” western international sports team may be an attractive target.

This year's IPL has been a dud for us. No game time, hence no chance to improve, get some miles in, shine, or build some confidence. Disappointing and a bit discouraging before such a big tournament. I'm looking forward to the three matches in AUS a whole lot more, at least the 5 guys in that group who are in the WC squad will get some game time. I expect NZ to bring out a full strength squad in the world cup warm up games, its needed.

Only positive I can see from this lack of play is lesser chances of injuries and players remaining fresh.

Item on TVNZ news tonight basically saying as of now the Sri Lanka tour is going ahead. There was supposed to be a recon/security tour in the next month or so, but that has been out on hold indefinitely.

What do you guys make of this year's contract list? Jimmy Neesham included is quite obvious, he's too good to miss out. What of George Worker? Harsh to drop him after giving him limited opportunities? Tom Blundell ahead of Seifert does that mean it'll take years before Seifert can get in? Any other obvious misses? Ajaz?

Also Somerville picked ahead of Ajaz to tour Aussie. Why not Ajaz?

I suspect the selectors initial feeling is that Sommerville's height and bounce will make him a more valuable 2nd spinner option (even if it's only in the short term) and would like to make sure that he stays in the picture ahead of next summer's tours of Sri Lanka and Australia.

Yeah, just twitter updates. We were 2/11 after 5, but Young and Blundell are rebuilding nicely enough now: 2/77 after 18. It's a very strong Australian side, really just missing Mitchell Starc.

Well well, Blundell has hit a 50, very very promising to see. So heartening to see Will young getting it on as well, just so reassuring that all the belief has hard proof to it.

181/8, fallen apart after the Blundell-Young partnership. Didn’t expect much given the quality of the teams, but a bit of a worry our World Cup frontliners Latham and Neesham couldn’t build on a pretty solid platform of 138/2.
