Not getting any credit for a 37 when the match is already lost, otherwise 2 and 4. I didn't see it but his 2 from 7 at the death when Bumrah hit the blockhole a lot sounds reminiscent of him not closing out that ODI in India, when we had a five match series there a while back.

He's great to watch when he hits, such a clean striker, but has not in my memory won an ODI or T20I from a tight situation in his career to date.
Agree he seems to struggle to just work it around to close games out, but he won the 4th ODI against Pakistan last year with an unbeaten 74 off 40 balls.

It came off that time and turned the game but it's a high risk approach. Would be nice if he could switch gears to a more Chris Harris style approach now and then.

In 2007 we also went in having just beaten Australia 3-0 in that CH series (admittedly Ponting, Symonds and Gilchrist were missing) so were definitely contenders, but got destroyed by Mahela J in the semi.

In 2003 we should have beaten Australia after Bond's 6fer and missed points after Kenya went through and we forfeited a match there - after South Africa got knocked out we were probably the 3rd best team in the tournament behind Aus and India but missed the semis
The 2007 side had the measure of most teams IMO, but had a real matchup problem with Australia and Sri Lanka. NZ played them a number of times that summer and Fleming/Bracewell just didn't seem to have any fresh ideas against them; you kind of felt Fleming's era as (limited overs) captain had run its course.

Re 2003, while the bowling was a bit too reliant on Bond, the batting let the team down badly when it mattered most. In the Australia game even allowing for that Bevan-Bichel recovery 208 should really have been chaseable, while less said the better about the India game which followed. Personally I think this was the downside of the preceding India tour and those absurd pitches on which Tuffey and Oram enjoyed themselves, a number of key batsmen such as Astle, McMillan and Vincent came into the World Cup with zero form or confidence.

In terms of bad WC selections this squad doesn't have anything as bizarre as the omission of Chris Pringle from the 92 WC side for the relatively untried Murphy Sua. Crowe later said that the selectors didn't even consult him! At least Kane can go in knowing he has the players he wanted.

The 99 side was pretty good and Allott topped the wicket charts with Warne. Like in 15, they beat the eventual winners Australia in pool play. Had peak Cairns.

2007 side probably should have picked chris harris given the pitches. we were unlucky mills was injured but our bowling outside of bond, vettori, oram and some very effective styris/mcmillan usage wasn't odi standard

2003 I think with our big win over South Africa, and recentish form in the VB Series, I felt on our day we could knock over the best sides. Agree with Moss above that when it came to the crunch in 2007, I didn't really feel we had that in us.

jcas mentioning the 99 edition, I loved that one for the earlier season pitches that had a bit in them, along with the Duke balls. It brought NZ into it more with Allott hitting form, as well. Sadly I don't think there'll be much assistance for the bowlers this time around.

Trouble is he doesn't seem to have a basic defensive game (or a method which works) to keep out good bowling. Though he did show he was capable of batting soundly in that Christchurch test against England. Gotta hope he's getting some net good practice against spin given that Chahal is his RCB teammate in the IPL.

Yeah I agree with that, I did watch his 2 off 7 and tbh that was just a phenomenal spell of bowling. Even ABDV couldnt score off him.

I remember watching that ODI against India and I thought we had it in the bag. That was tough.

My main problem with CdG is that quite often he looks so good and then just suddenly cant find the middle, i.e. his 50 against India at Eden Park a couple of months ago. First 15 balls he was on absolute form but from then on it didnt look like he knew how to play cricket.

In saying all this, I still think he is more of an x-factor match winner than someone like Doug Bracewell. If CdG can win us one game out of 10 at the WC then I think he's worth it.

The squad for 3 warm-up games v Australia has only 5 players from the WC squad:

Tom Latham, Todd Astle, Hamish Bennett, Tom Blundell, Doug Bracewell, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Hamish Rutherford, Blair Tickner, George Worker, Will Young
Kind of defeats the purpose of warmup games doesn't it

Could understand those players involved in the IPL being allowed to remain in India if they had a packed schedule. But no one, not even Kane, is actually getting any game time there. Santner's winning last ball six yesterday may make him the exception.

Pretty lame that BCCI are forcing CA to move the NZ Aus ODI series. It's the summer after the WC, why on earth do India need to play Aus in India so bad?
