Spin threat - the missing link in Windies' jigsaw puzzle

Excellent article that lays bare the factor that will stop us being competitive at the World Cup. The most prescient part for me was:

To be successful in ODI cricket, more often than not teams need two spin bowlers, one of which ideally needs to be a wrist-spinner, capable of turning the ball both ways. England have Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali. India have Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Jadeja. New Zealand have Ish Sodhi, Todd Astle and Mitchell Santner. With Nurse's off-spin and Bishoo's leg-spin, West Indies at least have the right idea, trying to emulate the best three teams in the world.

But Nurse and Bishoo simply don't take enough wickets. Bishoo, ostensibly an attacking bowler in the team to make breakthroughs, averages 42 with the ball in ODI cricket and has taken just 15 wickets in his last 27 matches at an average north of 75. Nurse, consistent but defensive, tries to contain, and sometimes does a decent enough job at that, but like Bishoo, he doesn't take enough wickets either.

During the past two years, between overs 15 and 35, West Indies average 55 runs per wicket with the ball and they take a wicket every ten overs or so. The lack of cutting edge of their spinners has been a key reason for those struggles.
The stats are glaring. The visual evidence in front of them is glaring. So why on earth haven't we tried to do something about it?

I personally wouldn't play either Nurse or Bishoo but I can see how some people would have a role for Nurse as a defensive spinner who can slog a few (like Moeen for England who he has a similar bowling record to). Bishoo, however, is a completely confusing selection. Lets say the penny has now dropped and they will drop one or both of them? What are the options?

1) Fabian Allen - Electric fielder, defensive left arm spinner, can turn the ball away from the right handers occasionally. Attacking young batsman. He would be an ideal replacement and an upgrade on Nurse IMHO. Currently in the squad.
2) Sunil Narine - Stats, ODI history and T20 performances all indicate that he would be the attacking spinner we are desperately craving, as well as a dynamic batsman. His commitment to West Indies cricket is questionable as is his action though so it would be a risk.
3) Rakheem Cornwall - Brilliant attacking off spinner, excellent List A batsman. Has performed in domestic and A team cricket in Asia and the UK. Is fat.
4) Yannick Ottley - Leading wicket taker in the List A competition. Bowls very accurate left arm darts and is an aggressive batsman. Excellent fielder also. Would be competing with Nurse and Allen IMHO.
5) Khary Pierre - Attacking left arm spinner who gives it a rip. Decent fielder. Mostly unproven in List A but has an excellent T20 record.

I know I would go with Allen and Cornwall but I have no faith the selectors will. They are running out of time! This XI looks very strong to me:

Gayle
Lewis
Hope (wk)
Bravo
Hetmeyer
Holder
Russell
Allen
Cornwall
Cotterell
Thomas

Reserves:

Campbell, Pooran, Gabriel, Roach

Very good team and this side can challenge all sides in WC. I will just take Narine as reserve over one of the fast bowlers. His batting has improved so much and his bowling is still hard to get away.

If Narine demonstrates that he is serious about representing West Indies than he should be in the mix, so I completely agree. But unfortunately that is seriously in doubt at the moment.

Roach is injured.

Gabriel is, well you know (or should), is suspended for his 'you-love-boys' dialogue with Joseph Root.
Also Gabriel bowls his overs unbelievably slowly. Still, I'd be open to him playing ahead of Thomas.

Roach is decent but Cotterell offers a priceless left arm angle and decent enough death bowling.

Yes, at one point during his career, he was like Oshane. Raw and wild. Then he honed his skills to be a more consistent and accurate bowler. Oshane will have to do just that to thrive in this environment.
Roach might get tonked in this format of the game. The white ball is remorseless to bowlers. Cotterell's angle is a weapon. I agree with that.

Can people stop saying Universe Boss as if it isn't the cringiest thing in existence.

Made even worse by the fact that it's a self-styled nickname. Who does that? Other than Max Power ofc.

Could you explain that pls
There is a dancehall singer who goes by the name of Vybz Kartel, he is so versatile with his lyrics that he's given himself the moniker, 'World Boss'. He is in jail now.

Then there is Movado, who calls himself the 'Gully God'.
Marlon Samuels is the 'Icon'. Check his Instagram for more details.

At the time when Gayle was plundering the Indian bowlers in early to mid 2010s, he picked up that name...'World Boss' was already taken, so he went further.

I'm a Guyanese and ever since I have been familiar with the Jamaicans, they have always seem to put a little more spice to things.

It's all over in the Caribbean, where you have the calpyso monarch competion. Some names are: The Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, Mighty Terror, The Duke of Iron, Atilla the Hun, Black Stalin, Chalkdust, etc.

Fair play.

It's still annoying but context is appreciated.
