Rabada being rested probably depends on if Ngidi is fully fit, played a couple of domestic 50 over games and bowled well so he probably will be recalled for the ODI series

Amla averages 29 in Asia since 2013, 11 test matches, and scored practically no runs in the 4 test matches against India last time. Also, that go to shot he had where he picks the spinners onto the onside no longer works. Nowadays he just misses the ball doing that and is plumb LBW.
The problem with Amla is that he has a pretty unorthodox technique, meaning when it goes wrong it goes very wrong. That's what's happening now, and given his age, it's a good time to wave goodbye rather than waiting for him to get it right and then likely immediately retire..

I'd like to see us begin blooding a few young talents ASAP. It may be too early but maybe go all in and give Qeshile a debut, since he's undoubtedly a future Protea.

Something a bit different like

1. Elgar
2. Markram
3. Hamza
4. Faf
5. Qeshile
6. Mulder
7. de Kock

Yes, it'll be young and inexperienced, but Amla is doing nothing anyway and Bavuma doesn't feel like he'll ever be anything other than average.
Bavuma and Markram are our two highest averaging bats in the last 2 years. No way can you drop bavuma.

TBH there are more than enough quality OD bowlers that we could use.

This hang over of Bavuma being poor needs to be removed, he has been one of our best batsmen (behind only Markram) and our most consistent for the last 12 months, yes he has a poor avg and needs to start getting to the bigger mile stones, but he is the only batsmen to have consistently shown improvement. Dropping him would have to do nothing with his present performances and everything with previous stigma.

Seems to exclusively score 50s in tough conditions/situations. Not necessarily a bad thing for the team, but certainly for his stats.

I guess, but he still hasn't been outstanding.

I meant this team more in the context of the SL series - if we'd treated it like a Bang/Zim series.

Probably best we didn't in hindsight but still.

Him being one of our best batsmen has more to do with how poor the others have been than how good he has been. But as above, I meant my line-up more in terms of an experiment for this series than long-term. You likely switch out one of Qeshile/Mulder (depending on who does well) for Bavuma for India.

Who exactly are you thinking of? Hendricks and Paterson are quality domestic bowlers but haven't been entirely convincing at the international level, Morris is way too inconsistent, and Nortje (who I rate very highly) is just returning off injury himself.

Any of them will do a good-enough job in a one-off series for the sake of resting Rabada.

Bavuma has avg 44 in SA, not bad when you consider that SA is probably the toughest place in the world to bat right now. Only 2 players avg more than him in last 12 months, Kohli and de Villiers, two of the arguably best bats of the last 10 years. (I put the stats up in the SA selection thread.) And Qeshile has had one excellent season and I hold out great hope for him but lets give him half a chance to prove himself for another season: he is currently not needed. Mulder is a replacement for Olivier or Philander. Replacing a current batsmen with Mulder solves none of the teams imbalance.

That was a good ball.... pity for Elgar he has had a bad run of form after an excellent previous year.

Nice and loose from Elgar. Had a very poor summer. Just the one fifty and averaging a tick above 20. Factor in the bad catching and he is as bad as Amla.
