Don’t pick Gavaskar because he’s a racist scumbag who contributed Nothing to the game but to kick off the well known Indian victim complex which continues to plague their team and fans, and because he never performed against a decent attack here. Seems reasonable to me
So were Glenn Mcgrath and Darren lehmann

Number of test centuries by Gavaskar in OZ =5
Number of test century by Ponting + Steve Waugh + Allan Border + Greg Chappell in IND =4

Gavaskar is comfortably a better test batsman than any AUS have produced in post world war -II

Why does it need to be closed? Sunilz doesnt seem to be deviating from the topic. He's just giving reasons why he thinks Chappel/ponting are overrated.

I have picked top 12 bowlers of 1971-84 because Greg Chappell retired in 1984 and Gavaskar debuted in 1971 .

And here is the record of Gavaskar and Chappell against them overseas.
Gavaskar

Chappell

So Gavaskar has twice the runs of Chappell at a better batting average of 7 despite being an opener overseas. So now i got the answer who performed better against decent attack overseas.

Gavaskar probably was better than Chapell but an average of 40 against those guys back then is nothing to scoff at either.

Regardless, Australia was not at all an easy place to bat back then. Disregarding WSC and his home runs is a bit dumb. Don't buy this home runs don't count bollocks in general.

I don't really like picking top opposition/bowlers. G smith and Ponting were both fine against quality bowlers. Didn't really help much when they were getting murdered by zaheer and harbajan, and it cost series.

Don't buy this home wickets don't count bollocks in general. Don't buy CW bollocks in general.
Well home wickets count too, obviously.

I guess it becomes a valid criticism when it's an extreme like Ponting in India or Jayawardena away.

Chappell was a middle order batsman . He didn't have to face these guys with new ball. This is a huge difference

I also don't agree with this logic . But someone has to show the stats of Gavaskar and Chappell against top bowlers because Burgey has been accusing Gavaskar of scoring against weak attacks .

Are you doing this? I think Burgeys logic is that Gavaskar played against depleted attacks in the wsc era. Chappell didn't, because he was playing wsc.

Maybe that list excludes some games due to the bowler requirements. But you will find Gavaskar games where one of those bowlers is playing while the (currently) best bowlers in the country are off fue to wsc. I assume. I haven't checked scorecards.

Gavaskar's record against WI being overstated sometimes is true but Burgey takes this to the other extreme, which is equally wrong. Let's not fight crap by flinging more crap.
