Straight darts has been a genuine opening bowling option for many seasons. Renshaw's usually had the first over for the Heat, for example.

Yeah is this not a thing in other T20 comps? Bowling the first over with a crappy part-time spinner is almost the usual practice in the BBL now, because batsmen are too scared to go hard in the first over and you get a free cheap over without having to use one of your good bowlers.
