thinking about the Rayudu issue - I must say I do like the team management's approach in that they have decided to pick a guy and give him a long rope rather than playing a game of musical chairs. I just wish they had done this with a different guy.

I like the NZ balance today

MJ Guptill, HM Nicholls, KS Williamson (c), LRPL Taylor, TWM Latham (wk), JDS Neesham, MJ Santner, C de Grandhomme, TD Astle, MJ Henry, TA Boult

Neesham/Santner/CDG as 6/7/8 is good. Would be even better if we had a fit Corey for CDG's spot.

If Nicholls scores runs today, this will probably be the most impressed I've ever been with NZ selecting+management.

I still don't get the reluctance to debut Young, or to open with Ferguson, but the balance of that side is looking much better.

Probably a reluctance to go into the WC with an opener who will have potentially played 5 games against 2 opponents.

Benefit of doubt on Henry fading, desire to **** talk rising.
His Kyle Mills impersonation isn't going very well - needs to take 1-2 wickets with the new ball every match and add a bit of surprise bounce through judicious use of elbow kink.

I think they'd have debuted him anyway if the Nicholls problem (proven ODI player playing in a role he probably doesn't add much in) didn't exist. It's a bit of a two birds with one stone thing, leaving the option for more icing at #6 after the #3-5 of straight cake.

I think he'll be fine, or at least be every bit as likely to be fine as Young would be. I'm more interested in whether Guptill will change how he plays as a result, and whether it's Henry or Young there probably isn't going to change the answer to that question.

The extent to which Boult towers over the rest of this bowling attack brings to mind the bad old days of Shane Bond ripping through opposition top-orders before Vettori and co inevitably allowed them to limp through to a defendable total.

Vettori and co? Vettori is one of the ATG limited overs bowlers. But yeah the rest of our attack at the time was fairly poor, Mills would open with a good spell and go missing after the 30th over.
