Australian test selection 2018/19

The normal awards that everyone else has
Probably getting a bit closer now to what our best top 6 could be, these selections reek a lot less than the Indian teams.

At least we are picking proper openers, as in guys who open in the Shield. Happy to see Renshaw and Harris in amongst it. Both should play.

Why not play Pucovski for two tests? If he makes a ton, he's on his way to what should be a decent international career and can bat at 6 for a few years. If he doesn't do well, it's easy to send him back to Shield for 24 months "because we have to make room for Smith and Warner". Win/win.

Just don't get the selectors hard on for Labuschagne. Looks a half decent cricketer but no idea why they are so keen to select him when there are guys around who just seem a bit better.

Likely XI:

Renshaw
Harris
Khawaja
Burns
Labaschagne
Head
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

I don't want Pucovski to debut just yet. Have him around the side but don't pick him until he's a bit more experienced.

Glad to see Renshaw in the mix again. Hopefully he can nail down a place for good this time.

Not exactly convincing, but that looks like the best Xi out of the squad picked

Be surprised if Labu doesn’t play & Puc won’t get a softer touch than SL so give him a game

A number of players are incredibly stiff & the handling of Maxwell is a farce

I think it's fair enough to argue that his mental health issues could impact negatively on his career and his life if he fails. I'm assuming they've done their due diligence though...
That's for him to judge, not the selectors.

Generally happy with the squad picked. Replace Marnus with Maxwell, Siddle with Tremain and that's what I would go with.

I think it's too early for Pucovksi but Sri Lanka at home is an easy start at Test cricket. As long as he doesn't miss any Shield games if he's not picked I'll be OK with it.

Yeah this. In terms of employee/employer stuff, if Pukovski has been to see a mental health professional and got the green light, that really should be all the selectors need to know.

Doing otherwise would have highly disturbing implications

It's ok for someone to have mental health issues but he missed 4 shield matches because of them. Mental health issues take a long time to work through. I'd be very surprised if he's fully recovered. Throwing him into the side now could have a devastating impact on his life and career.
