Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Was just doing a bit of important research for the upcoming Sheffield shield draft and I found out Scott Muller made his shield debut in 1991. I always thought he was some young rookie. It makes no sense that Shane Warne wouldn't already be aware of Muller's bowling and throwing ability.

Makes Joe the cameraman even more guilty
Muller popped up for a few games in the early 90s, then disappeared and didn't reemerge until 1996-97. Bloke never seemed too committed to his cricket really

so it's 3am and i've just realised that james anderson and shane warne have, at this present time, played the exact same number of tests and ODIs as each other. truly remarkable

goodnight all

No wonder SL struggles to produce pace bowlers. He's a trash bowler and does that. Look at the guy on the other team with the first innings 9-for too.

Would you say their domestic has always been like that ?

The state they in, is quite a concern in all formats. None of their players are really in demand for T20 either.

SL domestic is very ordinary from my experience. I've played with dozens of First-class cricketers from SL over the years and very few of them have been actually decent players. A couple have been superstars though.

Yeah when they got Test status they literally just gave their best club cricket competition First Class status. 23 First Class teams all loosely based around one city. It'd be like NSW getting Test status and deciding to just give Sydney First Grade FC status.

It's a wonder SL have been competitive in International cricket all with that sort of FC structure
Haha I agree but to be fair they know that level isn't their strength and take lots of initiatives elsewhere. They seem really proactive in getting their fringe players playing lots of 'A' cricket -- I'd say it very likely takes up a bigger percentage of their budget than any other cricketing country given only India seem to do more of it -- and they some quick and dirty FC 'competitions' of five teams every so often as well that are clearly purely designed at bridging the gap a bit. They used to put a lot of focus on Under 19 cricket too but I think other countries have caught up to them a bit on that front.

So on a whim I picked up some cricket trading cards last night while I was shopping. These things are $5/ pack for 8 commons and 1 rare card. That's pretty reasonable for this sort of thing.

But the thing that annoyed me a bit was that there are over 200 common cars in the set. That means a minimum of 25 packs just to get enough commons to complete the set, except that they're completely randomised. There were like 6 levels of rarity as well, each having 10-20 cards with chances of 1/3 up to around 1/20.

The sheer numbers put it out of the price range of the average kid to even have a shot at collecting the commons.

I got a "Pete Handscomb, test player" card, a "Pat Cummins T20 player" card and a Steph Taylor card. I got some random bbl and wbbl player cards and a rare duo card that had Kane Richardson and a female cricketer who's name escapes me.

Surely they could have consolidated it down to a 110 card set to make it remotely collectable for kids.

Way too many of my friends in primary school ended up with a full set of Oddbodz or Pokemon Base Set - including rares - for me to believe that's really out of the price range. Assuming they actually become popular (doubt).

that's like the whole point of collectable cards. You'd have to spend thousands on pokemon cards in the late 90s to have even a small chance of getting a Charizard. Unless you tricked a grade 2 kid into trading you one for a bunch of worthless energy cards because he's dumb and then he realises what he did and complains to his mum and then she complains and gets pokemon banned from your school. I can't even find that Charizard now I'm guessing I either gave it to someone and forgot or it's sitting in a box somewhere in storage at my parents' house

The common set sold be able to be completed relatively cheaply though, for the poorer kids.

Leave the rare sets for the rich kids.

I must've spent at least $500 on various pokemon/yugioh cards back in the day.

Then one day like $100 worth were stolen and I quit for good. I owe that thief. Could've ended up a nerd but now I'm cool.

I probably spent four or five times that on trading cards in primary school. Or more accurately, managed to convince my parents/grandparents/other relatives to.

I still have them though and most of them have gone up in value so eh.

My mom gave away my Pokémon card collection to some neighborhood kids when I left for Uni. A few rare originals that may have gone up in value, but they're probably mostly worthless.
