At this late point I guess it's a done deal that Nicholls makes the squad, but it's just as the reserve batsman in case one of the top 5 is injured imo. Shouldn't make the XI otherwise, so promote Neesham to 6 and CDG comes in at 7.
I also like the 6 Neesham, 7 de Grandhomme, 8 Santa line-up.

Another thing I wonder if they'd consider is Nicholls as the backup wicketkeeper. I thought he'd kept wicket before, checked and yes he did in his first matches for Canterbury. Clearly it's not his core duty but it's only cover in the unlikely (but severe) event that Latham gets injured.

Depends how well Seifert is batting as we might not be unhappy to have him in the squad anyway. But if it's 'not well' then they could make a spot in the squad for someone else (like Milne/Astle/Anderson) by getting Nicholls to be the spare keeper.

You can definitely expect an injury to one of the bowlers by the time the world cup starts... Likely the squad will be

Munro,Guptill,Williamson*,Rosco,Latham+,Nicholls,Neesham,CDG,Santner, Boult, Southee, Ferguson, Ish, Matt Henry, T Seifert

Backups: George Worker, TAstle, Adam Milne?, Corey Anderson

Are we still waiting for Munro to come good? Last innings notwithstanding I'm getting Ronchi vibes. Problem is, who else opens? I wouldn't ask anyone else in the side to be elevated, pinch hitters (Neesham et al) don't really work, especially when you look at all the other international sides who tend to have legit openers.

The strength of our stars (Kane, Ross, Gups) means there haven't been enough spare bats tried since Baz retired. Batting records | One-Day Internationals | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPNcricinfo

I don't think we should lock Ferguson in just yet. Seems to be having the problem where he is knackered after three overs again.
I'm not sure if it was fatigue. I could be overrating his intelligence as a bowler, but I thought he was intentionally bowling within himself after realising that pure pace was just getting pasted on that wicket. His accuracy was spot on in later spells.

Yeah I'm hoping we see Ferguson get "match fit" again like he ended up last season.
Are we completely beyond the point of considering Milne?

I'm quite partial to some world's fastest Gavin Larsen overs myself. And it'd be interesting to see what he could do in England. Of all our "enforcer" type pacers, he's always had the best seam position and ability to get movement in the air, even if it has never really translated into wickets for him.

Also re: Milne, he seemed to do pretty well in the UK t20 comp last season as a death bowler, didn't he?

Think he's got to be in the conversation if fit. Has the experience.

I assumed it was a fitness thing? Otherwise defo my pick too, death bowling is hell lot better.

I'm not adverse to Milne but he basically needs to play in all the series before the WC for mine. Like, nearly all the games.

yeah. tho he and lockie really fill different niches despite both being 150kph so if we got over our southee in odis obsession i could see a world where they both play. their similarity iis both are good insurance against teams trying to fill their icing slots with hacks (as witnessed last world cup with milne).

Milne's ER in ODIs is 5.26, which for me makes the Larsen comparison bit of a myth. Still, I'm happy to have him in the mix., brings at least as much to the table as Southee does.

Ferguson and Milne in the same side would be great, but it would require the selectors to give Lockie a crack with the new pill, which they seem weirdly averse to given that's what he does in domestix.

Milne's abilities makes him a theoretical beast. However, it hasn't really translated yet. Ferguson, meanwhile, cranks it and averages low 20s. Milne has a slightly better record with the new ball than old and has spent most of his ODI career watching Southee piss away the new cherry.

if I had to rank our fast bowling stocks for ODIs my preferences would be:

Boult
Ferguson
(2015 Southee)
Henry
Bennett
Milne
Wheeler
Current Southee
Duffy

this includes his dire early career. in the 2014-2014 period he was tighter than the 25th over in the 90s

Milne's injured again folks. He's not played a game since T20 vs Pakistan. BCs won't risk picking him for the WC, No way he's going to last a month or two at a stretch.

People are still glossing over the fact that Nicholls will bat at 6 in the WC. I think that's terrible balance of the squad assuming Guptill, Munro, KW, Rosco, Latham are your top 5. Needs to be Neesham at 6, CdG at 7, Santa at 8.

He won’t, he’ll be the back up batsman in the squad.

No Doug Bracewell again, Ian Smith about to go murder someone.

Everytime I've seen Bracewell bowl he's reminded me of the bog standard 5th or 6th bowler who can roll his arm over a little bit faster than most but doesn't actually offer much. I'd say he reminds me of Scott Styris but Styris was a far more intelligent bowler, and could actually bat.

Bracewell, the right handed James Franklin.
