True but we beat Lanka most other times in that era. Point is that side could play Pak India SL away in a short space of time and almost guarantee two series wins at least. Whereas India have lost 2 out of 3 and have struggled away v NZ too.
Only India really had the gumption to stand up to that team until England in 2005. In a way, it was nice to see on paper superior sides like Pakistan and SA repeatedly get smashed home and away by that Aussie team while India kept giving them headaches.

Was Pakistan really superior on paper? Pace bowing wise yes but otherwise I don't think so.

No you did not. You lost in 1999 and won in 2004. You won in 1992 but Aus was hardly the no 1 team then (WI was who defeated Aus twice in the early 90s plus Aus also lost against Pak) and cannot be considered part of the no 1 era. Considering that part of the no 1 era is like us considering the 2007 win against Eng. So there is no guarantee that Aus could play Pak Ind SL and guarantee two series wins. When they did it in 1999 they lost against SL and Ind and won against Pak (4 years into their reign). Same thing happened with us 4 years into our reign - lost 2 and won 1. The only time they won two Asian series in the same year they were already 9 years into their reign and their team had matured a lot (main bowlers retired 3 years later). The core of this Indian team all have 4-5 years left minimum and the new guys Bumrah, Kuldeep, Pant have years ahead of them. So let us go further into our reign. Considering the NZ away loss is irrelevant as that is before our reign. Doing so would mean including Aus's loss in Pak in 94-95.

Watching Symonds being given sawn off by a terrible decision was delicious.
After Kumble's press conference at Sydney the way they raised their game was scary even without Warne and Mcgrath, that was some of the toughest cricket I've watched on tv. Which made the Perth win and the tri - ODI series win even more sweeter.

In the '90s, they were definitely stronger. Our best batsman Sachin was better than anyone they had but that wasn't enough to make up for the difference in attack strength. They did beat us in India in '99.

When Dravid/Ganguly/Laxman/Harbhajan matured and Kumble got better away from home, we overtook them.

India never stood up to that team in Australia when they were at anywhere near full strength. They got smashed in 99/00 and didn’t have the balls to go for a win in Sydney in 04 against a massively depleted bowling outfit. In 08 they disintegrated like a Sao in a blender except for Perth, and by that time Warne, McGrath, Martyn, Langer and Gillespie were all gone anyway. They might have talked the talk but they didn’t walk the walk.

Mate you picked the time frame and identified 4 losses that would’ve only been 3 with normal scheduling. You’ve just lost two in a year.

Was thinking early 00's really, around the 00/01 series. Would certainly agree they were better in the nineties.

On paper, I'd say so, yeah. They had Inzi, Younis (not quite at his peak), Yousuf so their batting, while inferior to India's was definitely still strong on paper. Team of underachievers really. Always got smashed by Australia and South Africa in that period.

Their spinners falling off a cliff after '00 or so wouldn't have helped. Hard to believe Saqlain's only 42.
