I remember seeing it somewhere. Temba is 2nd on the list average wise but played half the number of tests as we left him out on those Indian pitches going with extra bowler which I always felt should have been the other way around with Australia. Think he was about 38. Markram was in the 40s.Nobody has averaged very high... we talking about series here in SA on pretty difficult pitches and the 2 tests in SL. I don't know how (can't be bothered!) to check the avg for the SA top 7 in the last year but nobody has really excelled.
Wasn't Bavuma injured for the India series rather than left out?I remember seeing it somewhere. Ya. He was injured for a long time at the start of the year.Wasn't Bavuma injured for the India series rather than left out?
Anyway, here are the averages for the last year (not including the first test of this series): Batting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPNcricinfo
Bavuma comes in second, behind AB.

Not by me. Seeing RSA bat anyone out of a match is a novelty. An almighty crushing as predicted
Much to young then.....Not by me. Seeing RSA bat anyone out of a match is a novelty.
If memory serves me correct , missed out on selection for India series to go Elgar, Markram, Amla, AB, Faf, QdK in a 6/5 split.Wasn't Bavuma injured for the India series rather than left out?

Oh yes. You're right - that was the four seamer experiment with Philander batting at 7, which thankfully seems to have been abandoned. If memory serves me correct , missed out on selection for India series to go Elgar, Markram, Amla, AB, Faf, QdK in a 6/5 split.
Perfect storm, only happened because AB and Steyn came back, and Bavuma was injured.... not likely to happen again.Oh yes. You're right - that was the four seamer experiment with Philander batting at 7, which thankfully seems to have been abandoned.
Especially with it being played on such sporty pitches v India it didn't make sense going with a batsman light. I think a few of us were excited but only for 1 or 2 tests if it suited going 6/5Oh yes. I think the excitement mostly came from the prospect of seeing Steyn, Philander, Rabada, and Morkel all bowl together, but then Steyn got injured...I think a few of us were excited but only for 1 or 2 tests if it suited going 6/5
Think we've gone a bit far on some of our pitches recently... seam and bounce is great but need to give the batsmen some sort of chance. This Newlands pitch has been pretty good though.Thinking back on the blunder of pitches created which not only helped seamers too much than what we ideally wanted and it spun on day 1 session 1 at Centurion and selection issues from both sides it really was a shoot out and our win is better than it looked.
