*Official* Sri Lanka Tour of New Zealand 2018/19

U19 Captain
Guptill, Young, Williamson, Taylor, Munro, Latham, Neesham, Santner, Southee/Henry/Jamieson, Ferguson, Boult.

**** I don't know, it's hard to balance that middle order without having a makeshift opener. Latham/Nicholls/Williamson could all open. I think Larsen and Stead will be conservative, scared of changing things too much prior to the world cup.

I see the T20 side has been named, Kuggs has beaten Jamieson for a spot, Rance given more chances along with Phillips. Do we all agree Phillips is severely under developed? He needs a lot more time in domestic cricket, has so many flaws to his game. Don't get me started on Nicholls :@

I don’t think it’s that surprising that Neesham would be so popular on social media but disliked by teammates. His social media presence is fairly acerbic and smarmy by cricket-bro standards

I guess from that the 2 players likely to miss out are Rance and Kuggeleijn? I would be happy if Kuggeleijn never gets into a NZ squad again. An absolute pest.

I don't think Phillips is severely under developed as opposed to someone like Seifert? Phillips had a pretty great CPL against some decent bowlers. I just want him to actually be given a decent length of time in the squad and not chopping and changing like they did for the last couple of seasons. Arguably a better keeper than Seifert too.

Disappointing to see Jamieson miss out - was expecting that T20 to be his international debut.

I wouldn't care less who's playing T20Is to be honest. It has no relevance and T20s are best left to leagues. We lost 3 to Pakistan recently and wonder if anyone really worried about it at all? Pick anyone and the results will always be inconsistent. Just the nature of the game.

Not really true - look at SLs record from about 2011-2014 where they made the t20 WC final twice (winning in 2014) on the back of consistent selection and making use of their best batsmen and bowlers even in standalone t20I games on random tours (Sanga, MJ, Dilshan, Herath, Malinga).

I would take any rumours about who is popular/unpopular, who is well-liked in the sheds etc, with a massive grain of salt.

Can probably treat the T20 squad named as a secondary trial squad for the ODI team - fringe players like Phillips and Rance could push for ODI caps if they go well in the T20s, while someone like Nicholls, who doesn't look a T20 player at all, gets a chance to play a high SR innings that might secure his ODI 6 spot (though I doubt it).

Would prefer Jamieson to Kuggeleijn too.

I can imagine jimmy making some incisive comments which fly over the heads of the Bracewells who grunt and compare the size of their clubs. Have experienced enough of team sports environments to know that you can be a pretty reasonable human yet still not fit in.

Maybe he mocked Bracewell’s parrot.

I love Jerry Coney, but what the hell would he know about the team culture in 2019? Seriously?

If I’m judging from Jimmy’s SM posts and his content here as an ex-poster here, he strikes me as a genuinely good bloke with a slightly wacky and dry sense of humour, kind of in the Piggy-Styris mould. Just likes a bit of banter and piss-taking like most decent Kiwi blokes.

If it’s true that teammates are a bit sensitive about him, I’d guess it’s their fault, and not his.

That's pretty cool, perhaps this forums is what set him up as a cricketing web wizard. It had to have a beginning somewhere. Still surprises me the likes of Martin Crowe and Jimmy Neesham were on public forms airing their views... Particularly when they are doing this for earning. You have to have quite thick skin to get on forums if you are a playing professional... In my opinion, definitely not a good idea.
Yeah I think that's why Jimmy stopped posting. He'd made about 700 posts here before he even debuted domestically, and he kept posting for a little while afterwards but less frequently, and eventually he stopped. He never said why but I think his increased profile would be a fair guess. I wonder if he still has a read here from time to time.

Desperate Sri Lanka searching for elusive complete performance

January 04 2019

Sri Lanka will hope to draw level with a more complete performance

Despite their 45-run loss in the first One-Day International, Sri Lanka will be slightly satisfied with the fight they showed in chase of a daunting target. It was Martin Guptill's century and an all-round show from James Neesham that made the difference but Sri Lanka found their heroes as well before going down. The visitors have lost four of their last five ODIs but did well to threaten New Zealand in parts.

However, the visitors will be well aware that their issues are large enough to overshadow good performances. The revival needs to come from all departments. The bowlers have let the team down but the batsmen have played their part as well is spoiling things just when it seemed everything was coming together.

They could look back at their win in the ODI against England in Colombo last year after being humbled in the series. Half-centuries from the top four were followed by the bowlers chipping in with crucial wickets. In their chase in the first ODI, after the openers had posted 119 inside 18 overs, Sri Lanka looked good to run New Zealand close. Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Asela Gunaratne were the biggest disappointments as they not only failed to capitalise on the platform set but also pulled the team down with their scoring rate. Their dismissals crippled Kusal Perera and the match slipped away even before he could completely open up.

Bowling is another major concern and one aspect that needs to be addressed is their death bowling. Neesham made the difference in the end with his unbeaten 13-ball 47 as Thisara Perera leaked 34 in the 49th over. Lasith Malinga isn't the same anymore and the team needs to identify their death bowlers and give them ample opportunities ahead of the World Cup. Another issue that's plaguing them is Dickwella's inability to convert his starts. From his 47 games, the opener has nine half-centuries and only two centuries. When he was dismissed for a 50-ball 76 he had not only thrown away a ton, he had also given the hosts a chance to slam the door shut on his team.

Sri Lanka were fined for slow over rate and one more such instance could see Malinga getting banned. The visitors, certainly, wouldn't want to head into the final contest with the series gone and their newly appointed captain on the sidelines as well.

For New Zealand, the first game checked plenty of boxes. New Zealand coach Gary Stead had stressed this series is an opportunity for players to grab a spot in the World Cup side. Tom Latham and Colin de Grandhomme, who have been rested for this series, are expected to be part of the travelling party and Neesham did exceptionally well to make a claim for the few remaining spots. More will be expected from Henry Nicholls and Tim Seifert with the bat while Matt Henry will be eager to turn things around after a disappointing outing.

If New Zealand are able to seal the series, they will also be able to give their key players some additional rest ahead of the series against India. For Sri Lanka, though, time is running away quick and fast and they certainly wouldn't want to enter the World Cup without a settled combination.

What: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI, 2PM local time

Where: Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui

What to expect: Another run fest in what is expected to be another pristine day for cricket with no weather hindrances.

Team news:

New Zealand: The hosts should look to give the same XI another opportunity to seal the series before giving Doug Bracewell his chance to make a claim.

Sri Lanka: Sadeera Samarawickrama was added as a replacement for Angelo Mathews. However, with Danushka Gunathilaka showing some semblance of form, Samarawickrama is likely to spend time outside the playing XI. Seekkuge Prasanna and Lakshan Sandakan were impressive with the ball and that could mean Nuwan Pradeep making way for Dushmantha Chameera.

What they said:

"The bowlers didn't deliver many wicket-taking balls. We didn't use variations even on a batting wicket. We have to analyse that and come back stronger in the next game" - Malinga.

"I played the CPL and played in England, and in the last three months I did a lot of hardwork to come around and everything is fine with my injuries now. Everything is settled down now" - Guptill.

Teams (from):

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Colin Munro, James Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Ross Taylor, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.

Sri Lanka: Lasith Malinga (c), Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Asela Gunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Dasun Shanaka, Lakshan Sandakan, Seekkuge Prasanna, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara, Sadeera Samarawickrama.
