Agree with all the posts saying Chandimal needs to stop hiding at 6, especially while Mathews is relatively low at 5 (even if he's batted most of his career there). Chandimal has the ability and experience to bat 4, so needs to take more responsibility.
Chandimal has scored a decent number of centuries too - no 4 should be his spot, Matthews has the technique against pace to bat 3, but has always had a very good ability to bat with the tail and mould his game to the situation, although he could think about batting higher now that he doesn't bowl.

Really puts into perspective the issues with SL domestic cricket this little discussion in commentary.

Too many teams (wide distribution of talent leading to an overall poor standard)
No provincial set-up (no disparity of conditions, talent outside of Colombo schools can go undiscovered or not nurtured properly being away from the main scene)
Games are too short (which encourages **** pitches and creates more of a gap between FC and test cricket)

We've gone to the short ball attack very quickly this morning. The ball's only 15 overs old, would've liked us to at least go a few overs looking for swing and edges behind.
I agree. Straight to plan B, without giving plan A a try at all. So what is New Zealand’s plan C?

Yeah doesn't seem like that worked very well, particularly Wagner's attack today.

Interested to see how Ajaz goes, doubt there'll be much assistance in the surface for him, but I'm sure he'll be patient.

Sets our guys up to think they are world beaters when they get runs rather than realising this..

Also, SL loves to brag about how brilliant our school set up is and how it is one of the best school cricket programmes in the world.

I don't think this has been true for nearly a decade and a half.

There is plenty to suggest that there is favoritism by coaches (parents getting too involved). A huge focus on winning rather than nurturing talent. And way too many games played at that age.

There are a lot of people living in these types of bubbles. And we get these players come through the "system" and watch them fail for their first 25-30 Tests, wondering where it all went wrong.

Wagner 8-0-62-0

Going to Wagner at 3rd seamer, going to plan B before CdG even has a bowl. This is dumb.

Wagner's history 3rd seamer v 4th seamer: is 14 runs per wicket worse.

62 off 8 overs from Wagner. It’s almost as though Sri Lanka learnt a lesson or two from their last tour here.

Good from Mendis so far today. The kid has the talent but his downfall is his temperament usually. Glad to see him showing what he is capable of..

I just went for a lunchtime walk and the wind has turned Wellington into the hayfever city of hell.

Seem like very weird tactics from NZ so far today.

Well batted first session by SL, especially Mendis - starts to break down the enormous task of saving the match into manageable pieces. The fast run rate from Wagner puts them on track to make NZ bat again by the end of the day too.

NZ need to be more patient I think. Can afford to wait it out looking for two wickets in the next 2-3 hours of cricket, then knock over the tail with the second new ball.

Perhaps it's a bit harsh on Wagner, especially coming from someone that's backed him since the dark Doug Bracewell days, but I really wouldn't mind seeing Ferguson get a go at the moment.

One session down two to go for Sri Lanka. If they manage to get through the day with 2 or 3 wickets left, KW will lose some serious captaincy points.

Still, well played to Mendis and Mathews so far. NZ will need to bowl with a lot more patience and intelligence after lunch. The SL middle-order are genuinely test-class and you can't just rely on a stream of bouncers on a pitch that's playing this well against good batsmen. I'd rotate Ajaz and Colin from the South end and Trent and Southee from the north for the entire session. Build pressure, bowl in good areas and hope for a mistake.
