I don't really believe in first innings declarations but I think the scoring rate here is pretty silly in the circumstances.

Have to stay out there as long as possible. Sri Lanka still have time to chase these runs to win. Latham has it all on his shoulders to bat out the draw here so he’s right to turn down the single.
Heart in mouth stuff with Ajaz's near wicket, could come down to Latham trying to shepherd Boult to somehow bat out the day.

I guess they’re thinking ten overs tonight will give them 20 with the second new ball tomorrow, and that should be enough.

It's very simple form now on. SL have to score 450 runs in the second innings. That will give them just enough to try for a draw. 200 overs are left, at least we have to bat 150 out of them. Then 180 runs in 50 overs NZ still get it, but at least will make supporters feel better. ANything below 400, there is nothing even to talk about.

Clearly the best way for Boult to warm up for a vicious spell of new ball bowling is with 3 overs of heave-ho with the bat. Only explanation for NZ still batting.

Congrats Latham on 250

Off the top of my head, 264* is NZ's 5th highest test innings and the highest by an opener.

edit: no, Brian Young got 267*, so Latham's is 6th and 2nd highest respectively
