God I still can’t believe he played after World War II, was a shadow of himself, apparently tragic to see. Also pretty tragic how he ended up in the end.
It was only his last match against Somerset in 1951 that was apparently painful to watch. In 1946 his FC average was 85; then he did poorly in the Aus tour, and retired. IIRC he only played two more F.C. games - a friendly in 1950 where he did fine on a flat wicket, and the Somerset game.

Is there any footage of Hammond smothering spin?

Then again, how good was spin bowling in his era?
Were there more minefields?
Hammond would have faced Grimmett, OReilly and Ironmonger against Australia and he averaged 50+ against us.
