england like to pretend they were terrible in 99 but weren't they coming off a reasonable series against sa? i swear i read that the last time they moaned about the 90s

im far too young to gain a real measure of how good the other teams were. oz and england had their issues but they had some great players too in the 80s
Well if you're referring to England's home series win against SA, that was the previous year in '98 and yes that was a decent side. And they were not too bad, if clearly inferior, during the 1998-99 Ashes tour. Thing was they bombed spectacularly at home during the 1999 world cup so the prevailing mood was death of English cricket etc. Lots of chopping and changing as well going into that NZ series. Was very much a collection of individuals unsure of their places and new skipper Hussain still finding his feet.

Having said that, NZ were looked at as nothing more than an easy first assignment for Hussain and preparation of the upcoming South Africa tour, when they had clearly jumped a level in recent times.

Chris Cairns was a GREAT player circa 1999-2000.

And Dion Nash should have taken many more wickets.

I still remember following that series. I recall listening to radio sport late at night, at first angry that Alex ****ing Tudor scored 99* to win the first test, then I think I watched the Oval test on TV.

It's a myth too that they bombed spectacularly in the '99 WC

3 wins 2 losses including an 8 wicket win over the defending champions. Same group stage result as Australia

Can't believe we are so close, hope no more dramas. Need to get these two early in the session. Both are capable batsmen. One early wicket and it's all done. It'll lift the cricket profile heaps with a win.

I have a lot of fond memories watching that 99 NZ vs England series. Ultra low scores made it so much fun to watch. Cairns' 80 to win the series one of my all time favorite knocks.

England 1999 for mine, but a bit biased as I watched practically every ball of that series and remember it in great detail. NZ dominated a fair bit in that series and it was a sort of coming of age for Fleming, Cairns, Nash etc.

If NZ do win this however, it would be something quite special as this Pakistan side *ought* to be outclassing NZ in these conditions. Quite crazy seeing how NZ have been playing catch-up all series and now suddenly doing the frontrunning.
England 99 was amazing. Some memorable performances. The drawn series vs Pakistan last time around was amazing as well.

Commentators are talking about Babar getting to 100 - bit premature for a bloke who's on 7*.

Was made more satisfying after the Wisden editor Matthew Engel described NZ as the most boring team in the world before the series.
