Looks like Handscomb, Harris and Finch (1/2 of the Australian batting lineup) are going to be on the losing side, despite being backed by a stronger bowling attack than their opposition.

It's like the players Langer seems off-side on his opinions are being proven right so far, but the players he's backed haven't justified the faith.

It's a malaise that is hitting the entire Australian cricketing fraternity - poor batting all round.

But it's not like Ponting, Hayden, Langer, Martyn etc... all made great scores when they got to play a couple of shield games.

Maxwell gets like one shield game per year. Renshaw hit three hundreds last season and a lot of runs in county. He's shown promise so far this season without breaking through the hundred mark. Burns got dumped for no reason and is still one of the highest run scorers this year, despite avoiding the hundred mark so far.

Geez that was a mismatch in quality in that England vs West Indies match, especially once Botham got injured.

Malcolm Marshall 8 wickets + half century is a pretty decent test match performance.

Fine, I guess there's an asterisk next to that, just like the maximum you can score off a legit over is 36, you can score more with factors outside your control.

Only test for Thelston Payne, an attacking wicketkeeper batsman from Barbados. Never got much of a look in at international level because of Dujon but could probably have made most other test sides of the era
