That's highest then because 822 quality points and 0 career points would put a player at #23. Neither #21 nor #22 had higher quality points.
Barnes will certainly have higher quality points to be ranked this high. Remains to be seen if Hadlee or Murali can top it.

I really can't believe that Barnes, with the adjustments for era and opposition, is going to come this high.

Maybe that is some food for thought. The 1900s weren't as bad as the 1890s were for for batting. Pitches vastly improved at the turn of the previous century. Barnes faced a very high quality of Australian batsmanship too. Whilst he won a lottery with matting wickets in SA, the quality of batsmanship was better than what Lohmann faced albeit still minnow-ish. Maybe he really was Bradmanesque.
As per contemporary account he was faster than Bedser and by extension Fazal. He was notably different from bowlers like Noble, Turner and Spofforth. Definitely the first master of swing. Perhaps the novelty of swing bowling in those days means he'd be less effective today. There is of course the conditions question also.

The irony is not lost on me. Trust me, unlike most Australian posters in this site, I have actually seen cricket not broadcast by Channel 9, instead of relying on second hand descriptions of what it's like and fronting.
