it was during this weird time where SA were mostly not picking him in shield cricket but he was playing in all the ODers. him randomly appearing at 3 capped it all off

I don't think we can be too hard on Eloquentia there. He is raw.

Couple things to like about Pope already, turns his leggie just enough to make bounce a real weapon even for the long-hops and doesn't seem too fussed about the fact his wrong 'un is more pickable than Lawry's nose, it's still a ****ing dangerous ball as we've seen in both his games.

That might be a way forward, really. Go the anti-Aussie way of bowling big wrong 'uns as his shock-and-awe balls, work at pitching immaculate leggies as his variation the batters go after.

tbf other than a couple of his wrong'uns Pope got his wickets from rubbish balls. I wouldn't say he bowled particularly well, sometimes things just happen for you as a bowler.

How quick is he, do you know? Is he an all rounder?
He's not very quick - low 130s.

Brockley thinks he's the second coming of Bradman and he made some pretty serious teams on batting alone when he was injured and couldn't bowl, so yeah he's an allrounder. I'm patiently waiting for him to actually do something with the bat in a high standard of cricket other than just be selected to bat up the order before singing from the rooftops though.

I'm pretty excited about him, but this idea that he's Keith Miller is dumb. Maybe he'll be a non-disappointing Luke Butterworth (ie. actually rewarding the batting faith and also finding a bowling style that wasn't 120km/hr outies at Bellerive); that'd be cool.

To be fair the idea that a nineteen year old could add a yard and refine his batting a bit isn't completely absurd, but I'd probably be happy if he just did one or the other.

Yeah Green isn't overly quick at the moment, but he's about 6'6 and still 19 so there is the potential for him to get up to about 140ish a couple of years down the track. Think he has a real high ceiling as a cricketer.

When they were trying to bat him at #3 in the ING Cup at 21 years old after he slammed double tons in that position in the Futures League, if you'd have given them his final breakdown -- no internationals, batting average under 30 in all formats -- you can bet they'd have been disappointed as ****.
