One of the great things about Walsh was that he was merely good/average when he started. WI did not need him to be any better than that those days. Once Marshall retired, he started coming into his own and ended up as a great bowler. A true gentleman as well.

lol @ calling Lillee a "favourable track bully". Bit harsh on Kumble as well.

You have made a somewhat accurate observation though, that the ratings don't take into account favourable conditions sufficiently, such as a swing bowler playing most his games in England, or a spin bowler playing mostly in Asia etc.

Walsh has such a balanced record as well. Was great ( or at least very good) against every one almost everywhere. Australia is an exception but he is not too bad there either.

Walsh also ended up with 72 wickets in Lillee's backyard. Lillee played in Walsh's backyard and ended up with 0 wickets.

Nah wouldn't work. Overseas doesn't necessarily mean harder for a bowler.

For example it would be easier for Nathan Lyon to perform away (specifically Asia) than in Australia (typically a finger spinner's graveyard)

Without Lyon Australia would struggle to compete with India's Ranji team irrespective of how many runs Smith scores in Asia . You are massively under-rating his performance in Asia.

I'm in agreement with this metric.
In particular, with away performance being a definite plus, but not unduly so that it overwhelms home performance.
Also with the idea of peak performance having an influence (does not severely penalise fairly short careers).

The formula used is good is evident from the results we have seen so far. No glaringly wrong ranking so far.
