Crazy how he rose to prominence in ODIs so quickly then. I remember there was talk about how Davey Warner would struggle to adapt to Tests, I always had a gut feeling Finch had the mettle to succeed at that level too.

Warner was clearly the goods though whereas you could bowl hoops around Finch. He's basically become a better fc player and now a test player on the back of his ODI experience. He'd never have made tests if you were just looking at his fc form.

I think with his ODI success came a lot of renewed confidence, throw in a bit of specialist coaching as well.

Finch has done well on this tour. But one can't help but feel that the continued exclusion of Renshaw and Maxwell is harming the team's chances of victory.

Labaschagne basically could have played in place of Holland this test and made room for Renshaw too.

Nothing wrong with that either. If you get confidence in building an innings against international attacks then it should help you with your longer game as well. So good luck to him. We really need Finch to succeed now. Besides I think Gilly made his way into the test side via the ODI team iirc.

I think it goes to show that selection per format isn't as simple as we thought. Success in ODIs could be as good, or even better, an indicator of Test performances than First-class cricket.

Gilly was by far the best WK/bat in the Shield at the time too though. Bit of a different situation.

Yeah I can't really remember that far back re the shield. What I do recall is Gilly had a rough start in fc cricket then went to WA. I guess he had to be doing something special to get ODI selection and that may have been doing well in LO cricket as much as fc cricket. I made up my mind about him when watching a LO match btwn WA and NSW. NSW were cantering when Gilly and Julian were at the crease. Julian then started to blast them but even he was pale compared to Gilly. He turned what looked a certain loss into an easy win. Can remember thinking we just have to get this bloke into the side.

Finch had an awful defense for a long time. He didn't have the tools to succeed at fc level. He's worked on those and obviously had the raw talent. I don't mind him at all in our test side based on his last few fc seasons.

Sometimes you can tell when a player had the ability to succeed at tests. Footwork and defense are both vital. Warner had them. Finch has developed them. Head is... getting there.

Agreed

Finch's technique has come on leaps and bounds

Whereas his typical mode of dismissal used to involve minimal footwork that made him a sitting duck, he now gets into reasonable positions

Weatherald
Head
Burns
Harris
Patterson
Hughes
Turner
Cartwright
Bailey

Dean
I feel like you've borrowed my list here :)

Definitely think you should only look at the guys who average 40 over this period or a minimum 35 as Dean and co don't deserve consideration.

I should have used your list but I went through the records myself I was so incensed.

In his first 3 Tests, Mitch Marsh reached 40 in an innings four times.

In his last 27 Tests, Mitch Marsh has reached 40 in an innings five times.

I actually think that Mitch looked better with the bat & ball in this test than he has for a while

Anyway, barring a 2nd innings miracle, both should be gone

Both will fail (presume you're talking about Marshes) but will play out the Aussie summer, make one score somewhere on a flat track and then book a flight for England because selectors.
